Superb you guys have it all under control..... the spanner in the works of course is as you proudly show the policeman the initialled bill......he arrests you for defacing an image of the King, which a bank note officially is....punishable by up to 15 years in prison. An American guy was arrested on that charge one time previously (though I do not remember reading any outcome of the case, just about the arrest) Ever notice Thai banks unlike their UK counterparts for example do not write on the money, in fact Kassikorn Bank has refused on more than one occassion overseas banknotes from myself that have been written on, as they consider it to apply to all money.

Good points, Yurune - but I would figure that the actual IMAGE of the King is what matters in this case (and I would never write, or deface that). Placing an initial in the border of the bill, far away from that actual image, should be safe. Of course, I would defer to your knowledge in that case, as you seem to have more experience in these matters.

As I said, currency is officially considered an image of the King. Frankly I would want to carry out the debate of where that image starts and finishes from a cell. Of course the girl in that recent field report by someone tore the money up.....very serious offence, that was what I believe the American was arrested for. edit....a quick web search found this:
An American facing 15 years in a Thai prison for defacing an image of the king—he'd torn up Thai currency in a fit of air rage—was set free after Atkins called in a doctor of forensic psychology who convinced the authorities that his client was mentally unstable.
and this
Q. What’s the worst country to get arrested in? A. You’re at a disco in Bali, dancing with a half-naked Dutch girl. Then police burst in and demand urine samples from everyone. You fail a drug test…and spend the next 15 years in jail. It’s a lonely planet, indeed. About 2,500 Americans are arrested overseas each year, and Southeast Asia is especially frosty with partying tourists. A man was sentenced to death in the Philippines for 1.9 kg of pot. A guy who tore up Thai currency faced 15 years for defacing an image of the king. But we’ll save our get-out-of-hell-free card for Singapore, where drug possession is a capital offense and a teenage girl was executed when heroin was found in her suitcase.

I have not been the victom of this "scam". In the rare case that I use a 1000 baht note to pay a tab less than 500 baht in a bar, I always make sure the server acknowledges that it is a 1000 bill. I sometimes do it in a joking matter by "snapping" the bill. "Mistakes" happen, I guess. In the case of a "scam", I can see how this theft might be on the part of the waitress switching bills before it gets to the cashier, or the cashier (or both) However, there are a few techniques for getting more small bills in your wallet. - If you get money out of an ATM, you should request an amount that includes 900 baht (i.e. 3900, 4900, 5900, etc.) This way, the ATM will always dispense a 500 baht and four 100 baht notes. - If the ATM is adjacent to a bank that is open, you can usually go into the bank and get 500 baht notes in exchange for the 1000s. - Pay your 20 and 40 baht tolls in the taxi from the airport with a 1000 baht note. I have never seen a tollbooth refuse a 1000 baht note. - Western fast food places will almost always let you pay with a 1000 baht note, just tell them it is all you have, they will make change.

Actually I considered this and have not done this yet in LOS. I always seem to have small enough change. The other bug is that in most SEA countries I have been in the police really do not care and the initialing of the bill and threatening to inform the police is, in my case, a bluff. In my experience it is a 'Zero Sum Game' to get the police involved in a USD 5 dispute, it is not worth wasting my time...

To add to CG's list: Go to Robinson's (Suk Soi 19) and buy something from store - pay with 1000bt note. Never had a problem this way. When exchanging currency, finish transaction then give them 1000bt note and ask for change. Some (but not all) hotels that you stay at will change a 1000bt note. You might get 2 500s or 1 500 and 5 100s. Just ask politely.

There *is* an edit function, you do know that, don't you? I mean, I'm not even going to mention the magic of proof reading... See, that's why I was worried -- a guy of your qualities and qualifications shouldn't just let such a thing slip by...

No problem, it's all about imformation, and keeping everyone imformed - and since you're doing such a great job, I figured I would do my part in evening out the curve...
