Land of the free? More like the land of the regulated. But when people never go anywhere else in the world, the don't have a clue of what is what.
I had visited 12 countries since my last return to the USA, to include Cambodia, VN, and the PI. The guy just asked me if it was business or pleasure. I said lots of pleasure.
I am surprised they checked your laptop. I would think they would need some kind of warrant for that.

Actually, US customs can search anything you bring into the US without a warrant, including the laptop, as part of their charter. A year or so ago, I downloaded a copy from the ACLU of the rights one has when passing through customs, as I suspected they were going to get more pissy with people as time went on. You have the right not to answer any questions without an attorney present, but they have a right to ask you anything and to search everything you bring in with a fine toothed comb, if they choose. Fact is, they can legally detain you for just about anything they want, unlike a normal police stop once inside the USA. Of course, knowing they have this legal right (and obligation) doesn't make it any more pleasant, though... especially if you gotta endure a full cavity search (not had that yet, maybe good to practice it first with the ladies at Eden club).

It shouldn't come as any surprise that you can be questioned and searched upon entering the US. Customs is looking to see if you're importing anything that's illegal or more than the legal limit. That's what they should be questioning you about.
Customs is not there to make you justify why you're coming back into your own country. Immigration does that to foreign visitors. No one should have to explain why they are in their own country.
October 2004 was the last time I flew into the US on a non military flight. I had a layover in Manilla. About 2 hours before boarding time the place was swarming with Pinoy customs agents. A lot of them were attractive females in their early 20s and they looked damned cute in their uniforms. I was trying to think of a situation that would get me strip searched by a couple of them, but that's another story.
They taped off the seating area in front of the gate and announced that in accordance with US Department of Homeland Security policy everyone will have to undergo an inspection.
We all had to exit the partioned area, show a boarding pass, have carry ons searched, I had to show the coin in my wallet to the agent, we were all patted down, and had to remove our shoes for x raying.
This was beyond the metal detectors and X rays to enter the boarding gates area. We had to remain in this mini taped off area with no food or restrooms until we boarded the flight. It's no lie the ROP government was implementing US policy. I didn't know we contracted that stuff out.
Has anyone else experienced this?

The last time I went to the US, the Customs Agent asked me if I had bought anything while overseas. I pointed out that I had lived overseas for the last 20 years and EVERYTHING I owned was bought overseas.
He let me go with a small grin.

They are looking for contraband, looking for goods purchased that are not declared, and sniffing out (in a very roundabout way) people who are earning money overseas.
Of course, if you piss them off or get smart with them or they are having a bad day or they sense nervousness in your part, then they can take pleasure in going through all your posessions.
Also, some people's records are marked for frequent search, so same same every trip.

Yes, I have gone through customs at least 3 times in JFK. Never a problem. However, each time I was coming from London, and I haven't been through JFK customs since 9/11.
Obviously, each person's experience will be different, and I don't doubt that some experiences in JFK are terrible.

I travelled extensivly in the US during the TWA strike in the mid 80's. As the regular staff were unable to do their jobs, they had office staff and temps etc. They failed to hand in my departure card when I left.
Next visit I arrived at JFK. They took me away to a room and informed me I had never left the States.
I pointed out how remarkable it was that having never left I was able to return. They smiled, enjoyed a joke or two, I mentioned about TWA and the liklehood that that was the problem. 10 minutes to just process it and I was sent away with a smile.
I guess those days are sadly gone..........
