It's settled then, right? The laws and, more often, spontaneous edicts of each individual country, no matter under what regime, are to be the last word in human morality... The conquerors write the history books, and that's all there really is to it...
So in a few years, when we get rejuvenated with this more realistic and fair doctrine, the US should start paying compensation to the families of persecuted Nazis, for instance, who lost their livelihood and lives went all that Nuremberg Trials shit went down. Terribly unfortunate. But those were different times; Americans were so ignorant then.
And that's just one example.
Isn't it great though that now the US has shrugged off the idea of the UN or any other court of higher morality than that which prevails in individual nations? Africa and those crackpots--isn't it good we have finally agreed to the essence of self-determination? Soon, we will let the Middle East follow its destiny as well...

You just don't get it, do you? Despite yourself quoting how it works, you simply don't get it.
Guess what - while the Nazis were exterminating people left and right, NO ONE STOOD UP and yelled 'foul!'; No one was talking about Nuremberg trials; No one even lifted a finger for refugees (I recall the rather large boat of Jewish refugees being turned back and turned around at the Atlantic coast of America -- no one cared). Remember that? I'm sure you conveniently forgot.
Only once American *won* the war, and only once they were the victors, did all the 'justice' go down.

And that's exactly how it works, and what happened, to the letter.
Just as the Nazis set up their policy of pogrom, and no one spoke up, so are the Chinese setting up their own policies of dissident and population control - and guess what, no one speaks up (albeit the new derivative of 'not speaking up' is called 'active engagement' - meaning we give them all they want, including the Olympiad, and our governments look the other way while the Chinese torture and kill their own people).
The same happened while Pol Pot slaughtered millions of his own people; while Mao slaughtered millions in the name of progress; While Lenin slaughtered millions; North Korea starves it's people; Saddaam Hussein killed uncounted - what did the West do when all this was happening? Send them food.
Look, I don't like it any more than you do - I wish we had a government that didn't bury their head in the sand and acted more like the fictional President on The West Wing - but that is sadly not going to happen, and frankly, it's not worth my fighting for.
Just you writing cynical diatribes about it won't change anything.

Well, I think my diatribe sounds more cynical in the reverse order of paragraphs in which you quote it, and more black humor (including the very sad element) in the way I actually wrote it. You may disagree about my technique; maybe it's not even that good. But I don't know how else to express the irony and horror required to describe the terrible situations the human race keeps getting itself into.
However, "You just don't get it, do you?" etc is a bit strong, don't you think? I am sorry if I upset you. I don't know what I could've done to upset you. That's a bit surprising. I don't hold you accountable, Daffy, and I am certainly not relating people here with events then. Of course! But I don't think I am saying anything different than you are about this, except that in the way you reversed the order of my paragraphs it may make it look so.
I specifically mentioned the Nuremberg trials rather than WWII itself to illustrate my point that the convictions happened after the war and the discoveries, etc. Not during. This, to me, emphasizes the terrible irony of morality in this case... To wit, the trials may have been a good thing, but they could only have happened in the hands of the victors from other nations--after the war. The atrocities apparently were not a major issue beforehand. I did not conveniently forget this--I was trying to emphasize it.
And yes, there are other examples of this same process. Khmer Rouge, for instance, yes, is another one.
What am I not getting? Why did you reverse my paragraphs to make it look like I am putting forth something crazy and unhistorical?

This is exactly my point, I don't like it, and it is why my post (especially the last paragraph) was written sardonically. Yet the irony (this is probably the best word for it) that we both mention is preserved: the victors will indeed write the history, no matter who they are. Sure, why not? It's your thread. It would not really be threadf***ing, though, I think: We're talking about 'dumb criminals', so why not how to handle them? But that would also be related to Joe Wood's point above, as well, in this sense.
However, could be better on the Z since it's probably pretty inflammatory.
... On another note, I knew I was taking a risk writing in a 'sardonic' (as I called it) manner: I learned long ago that for some reason, that even more so than the written word on paper, that kind of humor is difficult to interpret on a computer screen for some reason. I have read of other cases of this complaint. Strange but true complaint. Still, could be due to my lack of skill at the same time.

In my opinion, as I insinuated, it all comes down to 'bad parenting'. Essentially, look at certain sons of self-declared hi-so politicians in Thailand, for example - as long as their parent acts as if it's okay to murder policemen and others in plain public, and then they get promoted into government, this kind of behavior will not only persist, but flourish.
It all starts with parents.

A well placed 'smiley' does the trick, usually. No magic to any of it.
"I think we should execute all miscreants and feed them to the dogs, for posting too many smileys in a post!!!" (angry, could be construed as serious)

Or you can simply make over the top suggestions and examples.
