Quote: from Skyblue on 7:30 pm on June 16, 2009 1co·lo·nial Pronunciation: \kə-ˈlō-nē-əl, -nyəl\ Function: adjective Date: 1768 1: of, relating to, or characteristic of a colony 2often capitalized : of or relating to the original 13 colonies forming the United States: as a: made or prevailing in America during the colonial period <colonial architecture> b: adapted from or reminiscent of an American colonial mode of design <colonial furniture> 3: forming or existing in a colony <colonial organisms> 4: possessing or composed of colonies <a colonial empire> Uhuh, point 3 and 4- Britons were a colonial Empire. Also, they were colonised way after the Romans by the Norwegians/Danish and Sweedes (Viking invasions) and finaly by the Normans (1066 AD William the Conqueror)
BUZZZZZ... wrong again. Colonial in the sense of forming a colony is a adverb.... you used it as an adjective as you were describing people... totally different meanings. I hope that English is not your first language. As for the Swedes (note spelling) they did not have a significant effect on Modern Britian any more than the Romans did.... During the Boroque Era there French influence, yes, there was German influence yes... but neither of these countries occupied Britian. Take you licks like a man mate...

CS, I wouldn't be so sure about the lack of Swedish (Viking) influence on the British... both countries sure do seem to enjoy their binge drinking even today.

Welcome to Thailand ! Where your new job is the local drunk ! Rampant Alcoholism amongst the natives and tourist ! Ever present P4P availability makes restless Punters want to get out and have fun ! Just how many bars are there in Thailand ? Thousands ? Pattaya has 100 bars per sq km with a party on every corner !....you wont find that anywhere else Sex or Racial Demographics ?... its been argued over and over.....young males drink the most, help cause accidents and fight drunk.... alcoholic tendancies are inherited.... psychological and physical addictions with alcohol evolve in an individual, his own ethinic background /society isnt to blame for one persons problem.... Ive seen Thai's drink hard and fight like hell as well, without someone's video recording In this mans case he was too drunk and needed to be thrown out of the bar..... one punch he was down.... he had head trauma after four blows.... Thais can go too far, Ive seen local gang bangs almost go near death, the decent barkeep lady put the brakes on it, with this incident! So who's got your back when your out and about ? you better be with a good wingman ? this was 4 Thais on 1 Brit Don't fight about it ! Just Roll with It and Party On ! ...... ......

Duh, When British (or any other citizens) move to other countries, settle and form colonies (ruled by mother country) they are colonials, or in the case of Australia "convicts". And before you knock someone's spelling "mate", shouldn't you at least check yours? WTF is Britian? and you forgot something before French. But your reply is a direct exemple of what I spoke of about "education". Here is another explanation in case you did not get the first one: co·lo·ni·al (k-ln-l) adj. 1. Of, relating to, possessing, or inhabiting a colony or colonies. 2. often Colonial a. Of or relating to the 13 British colonies that became the original United States of America. b. Of or relating to the colonial period in the United States. 3. often Colonial Of, relating to, or being a style of architecture and furniture prevalent in the American colonies just before and during the Revolution. 4. Living in, consisting of, or forming a colony: colonial organisms. n. 1. An inhabitant of a colony. 2. A house designed in an architectural style reminiscent of the one prevalent in the American colonies just before and during the Revolution.

As an Aussie I am always amazed at how much the poms love to fight. If they aren't fighting they are talking about it. None of my Aussie mates like to fight, with the exception of westies that grew up in that sort of culture. Some of my reformed pommie mates like the fact that they can go for a drink in Thailand and not get into a fight. P.S. Typical, cowardly Thais in that vid.

My guess is that forum political and otherwise "factual" arguments would be nil without internet search capability. Seems that many of the "fighting members" spend most of their time searching wikipedia, other internet sources and...........hey! That is not accurate and go on to post the flip side to a post. Quite humorous actually. Or....maybe their knowledge is from formal education. Hmm.. not. I spell checked nil. Fight on or here is an idea: lets talk about girls in Thailand.

romeland,I am well aware of the culture of alcohol fueled violence prevalent throughout Britain. I also recognise that residents of the UK are responsible for some of the alcohol based violence in Thailand. My point was that in the absence of a reliable survey no one can say with any certainty that British/Australian alcohol related violence in Thailand is disproportionate to the number of British/Australian tourists visiting Thailand. Anecdotal accounts produce reports of British violence one week, and Israeli violence the next week without establishing whether British or Israeli tourists are responsible for a disproportionate amount of alcohol related violence.

As a total digression... Without contradicting or answering any ridiculous claims about violent Viking blood (I'm not sure if they were made, though it seems like an opportune place; I'll have to go back through the thread, but barfights don't interest me too much) that even poets have made (Everson), I would like to point out that most colonizers of Britain in the first millennium were Danes and Norwegians especially, rather than Swedes, who mostly went to form Russia. You are probably correct in that the modern influence is mostly only linguistic and Norse words and old Germanic words (from earlier invasions) which form the foundation of English, et al. However, language is a significant reflection of cultural reality, and it would be a study which would probably turn up much correlations, if possible, as to how much the Norse culture influenced the development of modern English culture--as opposed to the earlier Celtic, Saxon, Angle, etc, and Roman. I think that would be interesting. Parts of Britain were in fact Norse colonies; it took until Alfred the Great to stymie that, more or less, in Southern England. The evidence in names of places, words, and people in Northern England is superabundant, besides written history. But then William came, too, who was a Norseman by way of France historically.
