I have said before, currency rates ar enot the isue, purchasing power is really the thing you need to look at. I would say domestic prices have gone up tremendously over the past 10 years. Everything from costs a lot more than it did so it is just not the currency rate, it is what the Baht will buy you.
I don't think I would use the phrase 'expensive for some people' as much as I would say " I can get the same somewhere else for the same money, why go half way around the world"
And think about this... the Asian economies really did not get hit like Europe and the U.S.... what will happen when the cycle turns to them?

You can see the f*** up in 97, believe me, all hands are on deck to prevent this from happening again..... so far, so good.
The easiest thing the govt. will do is to prevent capital form leaving the country, just like they did before. Currency controls really don't work if fundamentally you do not have an economy to sustain growth, but shor tterm you can by some time to let things settle down.

It is a huge problem across Asia. I heard from a friend who is an accountant for the Singapore Office a small MNC (with huge interests in Thailand) and they are getting screwed royally.
The Thai projects they have are being priced/paid in USD (quite common for MNCs) and it is in free-fall. The same is happening for projects in the PI.
Bottom line is that as long as the currency wars are on we have to hunker down and go with the flow.
I guess the biggest advantage from my part is that Bali, where everything is priced in USD, is cheaper  ...

Can not... that is done by the folks back at AsiaPac HQ in Oz... this lady can only record and report.
On the other hand when I worked for SeeBeyond (now part of Oracle) they did not hedge their USD contracts either.... hell if I know why but maybe it is too much trouble to 'cherry pick' the USD contracts out of all of their other work...

Just read in the NY Times that the Thai Nat Bank has been buying dollars. They don't want it to go much below 30. I assumed they were doing the opposite. wj
