at is why they had to use the german consortium with their knowhow to construct and build it. I heard that the drainage alone made up for about 50% of total costs!
=============================

Don't be like that lah. Even german technology but not much german engineer inside.

The Bangkok Sub-Way - My impressions :-
- I watched the telecast of the Inauguration of the Bangkok Sub-Way system by H.M. the King and I was absolutely impressed by the fantastic Organisation & the smooth execution.
There were some lighter moments when the King ( who usually has a stern and austere look ) made some amusing asides - e.g. after a senior official explained to the King the ticketing system and clarified that until 12th. August the fare would be only B10 per person, the King turns to the Queen and requests her to give the official B20 for their 2 tickets.
- I decided to try out the Sub-Way and so on my next trip to Chiang-Mai I took the Sub-Way from Sukhumvit to Hua Lampong ( the main Rail terminus ). I found everything working perfectly - the ticketing, the turnstiles, the automatic doors, the announcement system, the air-conditioning,the trains themselves - and best of all I got to Hua Lampong in 15 minutes against the 60 to 75 minutes it used to take me by taxi because of the after office traffic jams ( 6.00 p.m. ).
And unlike the Sky-Train, the Sub-Way system has escalators going up and down at each and every exit / entrance at every level.

And now to answer a few queries :-
Silentbob1234 :- The operating times are 5A.M. to 12 mid-night.
Hzink :- I am not an Engineer so I would not be able to explain how they tunneled underground with all the sub-soil water - BUT at the Hua-Lampong station, along the underground walk-way from the Sub-Way station to the main Rail terminus the walls are lined with photographs of how the Sub-Way was constructed and one would get an idea from these photos.
Regarding the prevention of water flooding the underground during the regular Bangkok floods - they have used the very simple system of ensuring that ALL entrances and/or openings into the Sub-Way are constructed WELL ABOVE the worst case scenario street flood levels.

Other comments :-
- I think that the authorities struck on a very good idea to have a concessional B10 fare until 12th. August ; FIRSTLY because it gives the masses a chance to experience one of the technological wonders of Thailand ; SECONDLY because it helps create a huge market amongst people who may never have ventured to try the system if it were not for the low fare ; THIRDLY because by donating all this initial fare collection to the Queen's Charitable Foundation they are earning a lot of Good-Will & Merit.

- There have been a few letters in the English Dailies saying that the low initial fare would attract such huge crowds that it would over-tax the system and lead to accidents and fatalaties. Well, anyone who has travelled the Sub-Way systems of Hong-Kong and Japan during rush hour would realise that Bangkok has a long way to go before it reaches those levels of over-crowding !!!!

SO ? Have I sold you on the Sub-Way ???

So why didn't they just expand the Skytrain system? Seems like a better and cheaper propsition, not to mention also a nicer way to travel (nice sights), as well as a nite tourist draw.

Sure have, though I will keep my reservations until after the first rainy season.

Personally, I have no doubt about the efficiency and technological know-how that went into it - it's built by Siemens, after all. I just find it ironic that a (lebeled) third-world country is doing a better job at building and operating a subway system, than Los Angeles.

why go over land, and have to buy it, when you can go under it..??

the route that the MRT takes is thru residential areas, unlike the BTS which travels above normal roads (Suk., PaholYothin). This would entail having to buy the land where they planned to perch the additional BTS davits.

ok guys here's the web site

Hzink,
They are going to expand the Skytrain System - OR rather extend it.
About the better and cheaper :- It seems that ( taking everything into consideration ) a Subway System is a better and cheaper proposition than a Skytrain System for any Metropolis.
And, incidentally - if you lived in Bangkok and suffered the chaos when the Skytrain was being constructed you would definitely root for the Subway System which hardly encroached on our daily lives.

Hzink,
A small clarification :- Siemens did NOT build the Subway System. Siemens only supplied the rolling stock and the train marshalling Systems.

we can agree about the mess that BKK was during BTS build.

every 2 meters of Suk. Rd from Soi 77 and PaholYothin to Chatujak was under construction.

didn't even notice when they were building MRT

i am noticing congestion at the new Hiway airport as I shoot into BKK from the MotorWay, and it's only just begun...

Sorry LY, the route is actually designed to pass under the road to avoid having to buy/compensate/protect properties above.

The few areas where the tunnels pass under buildings were cleared to make way for it. It is illegal in Thailand to tunnel under someone's land without an easement and as it can be difficult to find the owner only a cretin would plan it that way (which does not rule it out in Thailand).

The big problem will come with the extension projects, some of which traverse Chinatown's very narrow streets and others which pass under blocks of Huay Kwang.

As to flooding I am told the entrances and portals are 1m above the 100 year return flood level and there are stoplogs to install above that if it is particularly bad. Mind you that is what they did with the Taipei MRT which flooded 3 or 4 years ago.

Oh, and it wasn't Siemens who built it, they only provided trains.

The German company which took the lead was Bilfinger Berger. You see their name on the "thank you" plates at the entrances on the southern part along with various Japanese and Thai contractors and JBIC.

Bilgfinger Berger have also built most of the expressways around town including the one on the Bang Na Trad out past the new airport (this is monumental, truly awesome) for which they are owed Baht 7.4bn including interest.

Now not many people know that...............
