Quote: from CiaoCiao on 6:31 pm on Oct. 31, 2003 And last: 4) Are we ourselves not guilty of "exploiting' poor countries by similarly paying so much less for their goods and services than we would at home - open competition in a free market?
TouchÈ! I was curious to see how long it took for someone to pick up on that. After all, no matter how we try to twist and turn it, one of the big reasons why all of us are here, and love LS, is the lesser price for goods and services (and better quality of those goods). Yep, guilty as charged As you said, best debated over a couple of cold ones. We should hook next time I'm in the area, as there are no easy answers. Harry

Like Ukguy my background is in the fabric trade - the reason why I first started coming to LOS. Whilst there ARE onvioulsy a LOT of fakes about I still have dealings with one particular who exports 40,000 replica football shirts a month to one of the mojor UK sports retailers. Two popints there 1. they wouldn't dare buy fakes for resale 2. the goods are made in Asia (not too sure where)

I had to attend APEC. There was much preparation for the delegates. They were most impressed with the Royal Barge and the 'Light-show' on the river. In my capacity I was able to catch some interesting 'snippets' of comments from the delegates. Some said what a clean and magical country, with everything in order. The night-life reputation must be a thing of the past. It reminded them of Singapore. Some of the other delegates said it was just a show to impress. What lies under the surface is completely different. I was not able to get any information about whether the World Bank is going to give the country a large loan. I was not allowed to discover the alleged 'Night-life' even if it does exist. Security rules.

Quote: from Vancouver Jay on 12:12 pm on Oct. 31, 2003 Uh, no. Saipan and the rest of the Northern Marianas have been a Commonwealth Territory of the United States since '47. So unless the "poor country" you are referring to is the USA, no dice. And nobody is exploited. The garment industry workers are almost exclusively foreign guest workers -- Filipinos mostly and other Asians and Pacific Islanders -- and while they don't make the US federal minimum wage, they do make a bit more than is paid for equivalent work in their home countries.
Being paid " a bit more" does not imply that workers are not being underpaid. The garment and fashion industry exploits its workers in Saipan as it does elsewhere, including the UK, where rules and regulations certainly exist, but are frequently ingnored. A recent BBC documentary revealed that Nike's Saipan factory regularily employed under-age women. Nike could not refute this. The labelling of goods as 'Made in the USA', may also be legally acceptable, but is is clearly designed to deceive the customer. RO

AS: That validates my earlier report: "...the scarcity of APEC crews in entertainment areas largely as a result of Thai government warnings to Embassies and Embassy warnings in turn to their constituents." Most unfortunate. Better luck next time.

I had a break occasionally. One has to keep a vigilant watch around the clock. What? You had a 24/7 chaperone? Harry
