Here's the deal on wai-ing:
The normal wai has your thumbs pointing to your adam's apple when you have your hands together in front of your face. This is used for everyday, normal people.
The higher wai has your thumbs in front of your nose. This is for monks.
The highest one has your thumbs on your forehead. This one's for Royalty.
Anyway, the deal is - if an adult wais to you you can wai them back or you can just nod your head.
When a child wais to you you are not expected to wai back.
Forgive me if someone has already said all this.
I like wai-ing people. I find the Thais appreciate the effort.

I agree with Thaidup. There is too much fuss made over this issue.
If the correct use of the wai is to be regarded as a sign of respect for Thai culture, isn't it disrespectful to think that Thais are so humourless and narrow-minded that they will be deeply offended if it is not used in precisely the correct manner ?
Unless deliberate offense is intended, most Westerners overlook the trivial social errors made by foreigners, and I am sure that most Thais are willing to do the same for us.
Most of these do's and dont's are the result of travel writers in need of something to say, and to suggest how worldly they are.
