BKK Banger:And would Toxin be let in? Unfortunately he may though his Chinatown roots will always be a hindrance.
As to Toxin being the same, he is no more ethnic Thai than my grandson (if I had one) as his grandaddy came from China. Being born and raised here does not count to real Thais.
My understanding is that Toxin, Thai-Chinese that he is, comes from up north. Dunno anything about the Chinatown connection. This whole 'ethnic Thai' vs the rest thing deserves another thread on its own, but my reading of Thai society is that the Thai-Chinese are a lot more integrated than Chinese in other Asian countries (outside China, Hongkong SAR and Taiwan). Of those in Southeast Asia, Singapore is at one end of the spectrum where there is a Chinese majority in a peaceful, multiethnic country. Indonesia is at the other end with a threatened, oft-persecuted Chinese minority. In LOS, although I know there's a distinction, I would classify Thai-Chinese as simply 'Thai', IMHO. As to whether Toxin would be 'let in'...fuzzy point here, but I would've thought he was already in the ruling class.

Well HL the Chinese have made remarkable inroads here in convincing gullible lower classes that they are somehow Thai. Such a situation does not exist elsewhere in Asia. They are regularly burnt out of their shophouses in Indonesia for instance and not particularly liked in Malaysia, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia etc. As a farang we do stick out more but I am sure within a few generations Thais will come to accept that my offsprings' beautiful skin, big noses and abysmal Thai language abilities are perfectly normal.

Well Jafa it all depends on who you believe the "ruling class" are. Are they the PM and his cronies in TRT or another group which has long established family links to the real top of society? Democracy is a recent thing in Thailand and these jokers will not be in charge of the civil government forever. Their power waxes and wanes. As to Toxin being from Chiang Mai I am not so sure. Does anyone know his family's movements since granddaddy arrived on the steamer?

They introduced variety and diversity to Thailand and over generations, many intermarried (very strategically) the central 'ethnic Thais', who, as I understand it, were the holders of the seats of power in Thailand. --- Such a situation does not exist elsewhere in Asia. They are regularly burnt out of their shophouses in Indonesia for instance and not particularly liked in Malaysia, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia etc. --- Singapore is, I cannot stress this enough, the unique situation - majority chinese population who also call themselves Singaporeans. In Malaysia, I dunno if you can safely say that they are not particularly liked. In this case, one can also say that most minorities almost anywhere in the world are not particularly liked anyway. I think there's a lot of ambivalence in Malaysia. --- As a farang we do stick out more but I am sure within a few generations Thais will come to accept that my offsprings' beautiful skin, big noses and abysmal Thai language abilities are perfectly normal. --- This is funny BKK Banger 55555555 LY....

BKK It is more significant than that.... First, the Chinese held the wealth. Then they married Thais and in many cases made their names more Thai. The key move though, is that they financed the political parties so that they benefitted as democracy gradually replaced technocracy. Taksin is not the first 'chinese' PM - Chuan Leekpai was half chinese but acted like a technocrat and Banharn has chinese blood on both sides of his family. To show how successful the Chinese have been consider this - the Thais now love the 'Chinese look' in girls!! Lucky them!! P.S. Thaksin is 5th generation Chinese. Shinawatra family base is Chiang Mai.

From what I am reading, most everyone agrees that class stratification exists everywhere. Even in the countries where politicians attempted to outlaw the classes like China, it never really worked. Skin color is an eay target, language, education less so. Money really is the great equalizer. Say what you want about the USA but few other places tolerate complete morons when they have a lot of dough, like the US. Black skin? Get around that with alot of cash (look at athletes, entertainers, etc). Parents that are drug addicts or hookers? Buy a new pedigree with your millions and no one cares. Never got past kinnie garden? Its a badge of courage when your bank account is bulging! Money, the serious "Go f*** yourself" kind, seems to make anyone equal.

My friend Yannee from Yaowaratt tells me that when she was a child in the 60s Chinese language books were banned in Thailand and Chinese people were assimilated into society by the military government of the time. The 60s and 70s were a bad time to be Chinese in Thailand. The worry about ChiComm influence and the insurgence of the Communist Party of Malaya (also Chinese) in the South gave the military a few worries. Hence Thai names, Thai language, salute the flag and sing the national anthem twice a day. Nation building by the military.

Now that is one of the examples of variety & diversity I was referring to (they also like the 'Japanese look', but that may be a slightly different story). The one good thing about chasing girls/mongering in LOS is the wide variety of looks in girls to choose from. Something for everyone
