Just wondering why this story won so much credibility now, considering it was dismissed out-of-hand the frst time it appeared.

Found this in BangkokPost's postbag today: Airport scam is deplorable As a travel business owner I'm amazed and dismayed at the recent reports about an alleged shoplifting scam at the airport. Monday's most-read story on the BBC site was exactly this. It works on the basis that no visitor wants to remain here for months on bail to defend themselves in court, so when they are arrested on theft charges they are forced to ''admit guilt'' and pay a hefty ''fine'' to expedite their release. I've been following this developing problem for months, it's all over the web forums, I've seen similar warnings on some very popular international travel sites; a similar case of extortion appeared in The Times of London on June 22, and I've also heard first-hand accounts of cases witnessed by a friend at the Samut Prakan court. It seems very evident that an unscrupulous, burgeoning scam is targeting tourists almost on a daily basis (3 in 48 hours, according to a recent letter to Post Bag). This amounts to 30 very angry tourists each month probably writing to their local mass-media papers and websites discouraging travellers from visiting Thailand. At the very least, I would advise my own friends not to even set foot in an airport duty free shop, since it is too risky. I've already written to several guidebook publishers raising the matter. While we're all trying our best to boost our damaged tourism, the TAT and police appear disinterested in getting to the bottom of this potentially damaging and disgraceful practice. JONO
