Dear propeller heads... http://www.earlyaviators.com/ethai1.htm 5 good pages with photos detailing the earliest days of powered flight in old Siam. "Further developments in Thai aviation proceeded rapidly thereafter. Don Muang was ready for occupancy within a few months, and the first plane, a Nieuport, landed there on March 8 [1914]. (Bangkok's airport, it might be noted parenthetically, is the oldest in the world still being used in its original location; no road connected it with the city in the early days, the only access being by railway on the northern line, which passed the site.) " Now, can somebody please tell me on which date the first scheduled passenger flight arrived in Thailand?

I'm working up a monograph on the modal development of sex tourism in the Kingdom. No, I'm not actually, but it sounds good. We are 18 days away from the 100th anniversary of the first heavier-than-air powered aircraft flight. Yup, the Wright Brothers, Kitty Hawk, the whole deal. 17 December 1903. So next time you're jammed into a tiny, overpriced seat on some Boeing behemoth en route to the Land of the Golden Haunches (and wishing painful death to your seatmates Noreen and Norbert Normal from Numbnuts, Nebraska) why not allow yourself that extra beverage and toast old Orville and Wilbur?

The Wright brothers were the very best at working with the media and gaining all the notoriety despite not really having been first at much. The first powered, controlled, sustained flight took place 50 years before the Wright brothers, in 1852 (Henri Giffard flew 15 miles with a steam engine mounted on a dirigible). He went nearly 100 times as far as the Wright brothers did. The first powered heavier-than-air flight took place in 1890 (Clement Ader, steam engine on bat-winged monoplane, 60 yards). After the advent of relatively light combustion engines (such as Benz, Otto, Diesel), other pioneers pursued similar approaches, but no photographs were taken by Richard Pearse (New Zealand, March 1903) and Karl Jatho (August 1903). Finally, the Wrights needed headwinds or catapults to start their planes, so they were not fully self-powered. But Brazil's Santos-Dumont was (1906, first official airplane flight). An explanation for the Wrights' special place in history is that they went on to improve their airplanes, making them ever more capable, whereas Ader's later craft were failures. Another part is that the brothers were ready to contest rival claims, which would have weakened their position in patent litigation.
