I've thought to expand on the subject, now that we've reached that point of no return...
There are two types of societal divisions:
horizontal - based on money, social status, education, profession etc.
vertical - ethnicity, language, religion, culture etc.
I started this thread with the first in mind...but the second seems to be also emerging in the thread.
And they overlap. I know of Thai-Chinese, for example, who range from the hi-so to the ones operating the hawker stalls near my office.
Are the vertical divisions displacing the horizontal? Or do they complement each other? or what?
Abrak, Banger, shark, JA, Hermano...et al. - comments?

IMO, in Thailand when the girl is horizontal and the man is vertical the result is intercourse of the highest caliber.
OK, to stop my sarcasm for only a minute, the two axis you mention may never cross if these societies allow themselves to become insular. That is why there is a Chinatown or other ethnic, religious etc ghettoes.
However, when one group begins to understand that different is good or even just ok, the axis cross, society is strengthened (melting pot) and future generations reap the benefit.
And then it goes back to the high caliber intercourse!!

Yes... but not just in Thailand, globally. I think it has something to do with the hegemony of democracy/capitalism displacing monarchies/feudalism and the resultant breakdown of class stuctures, social structures....

Please add also 'age' on the horizontal division.
IMHO the overlap and mix also.
i.e. my relatives are Thai-Chinese business people with university edu (granpa thai/grandma chinese)
All of my 5 aunts married Thai-Chinese or chinese, my grandma insisted on that as the Thai-chinese think they are the better businesspeople and Thais are too lazy. (some more prejudices here!)
this may not be for the 'Thai high-so in BKK, but where I live the Thai high-so and Thai-chinese go along very well. So the 'horizontal status' by your definition (money) overcomes the vertical status.
i.e. my girlfriend gets her status, because today nobody in the family dares to challenge me any more (though I am 'younger') as they respect me as a business person and so to some extent they have to accept my GF, which they totally despised in the beginning.
As I am a very easy person (to go  ), all this BS system was very difficult to explore, but now I am trying to make it work for me.
To have a written in-depth analysis on this will take to far (dissertation),as it is so complex, but m,aybe we will have the time to discuss it over a beer.
