Quote: from Smegma on 9:54 am on Sep. 23, 2004 Europeans are responsible for the Thais eating so much spicy food. Europeans brought chiles to Asia from the Americas. Why are chiles so popular in food in poor countries like Thailand? They make food last longer. Despite the pain and irritation they bring, the Capsaicin in them has an antibacterial effect, so food cooked with chiles keeps for longer without spoiling, thus less risk of becoming sick from spoiled food. Also the pain caused by capsaicin stimulates the brain to produce endorphins, natural opioids which act as analgesics and produce a sense of well-being.
Yes, I was always taught that the Portugese introduced chillies to Goa and they spread to the rest of Asia (or just Asia, if you prefer to think of India as a sub-continent). But twice this year I have read of new species of chilli being discovered (one in Thailand and one in China). I have not been able to discover if these new chillies are simply mutations of 'imported' chillies or if they are true indigenous strains. If the latter, then chillies were here before they were 'introduced' by westerners. Oh, and contrary to popular belief, there is almost no heat (capsaicin) in the seeds, and not much in the flesh. Most of it is in the placenta (the white fluffy bit that connects the seeds to the flesh).

I always thought that Chilli originated in Mexico and was brought back to the Old World by the Spanish and then they took it with them to Asia. Am I wrong?

Europeans of some description...but the newly discovered species might suggest otherwise. I think it's resonable to say that someone (Portugese or Spanish) brought the chilli to Europe, but it may have existed in Asia before 'we' brought it here.

During 1930 maneuvers, 1 battalion of 75mm MGs from 1st {Guards} Artillery Regt was motorised with Morris 6-wheel trucks in an experiment). *New information from declassified French military archives: these were Japanese 75mm Field Guns, being lightened versions of the famous Krupp 77mm with a shortened barrel.
