Dennis Lillee probably doesn't rate as a "celebrity" because "celebrities" are usually fairly talentless nobodies who are famous for very short periods of time. No, Dennis Lillee is well and truly in the LEGEND category. I'll never forget the 6/26 he took in the first innings of the Centenary Test 30 years ago. So maybe we should be asking how many legends we have seen in Thailand instead?

===================================== "celebrities" are usually fairly talentless nobodies who are famous for very short periods of time. ===================================== It depends in which 'branch' you work. Sports usual has legends, while if you work as an actor or pop star you will be called a celebrity even if you're famous for long time of periods.

I guess this only applies to the female actors and pop stars.

I see so many celebraties where I work, it gets boring. Greatest one though was Garcia totally wasted, having to be carried to his room by 2 friends, after he lost his last game with San Francisco 49'ers

My Finnish mate who looked just like Mika Hakkinen until he bought a Finnish Bar in Pattaya and put on 40 kilos was approached by a bloke in a bar asking if he was that famous F1 driver and if so, could he have his autograph. My mate looked left and right, told the guy to keep it quiet and signed Mika Hakkinen on a beer coaster. What a cock. The guy has probably still got it wrapped in plastic in his hope chest back in Helstinki.

Whisper, could you please help me out here. I just cannot remember who the aussies were playing in this match. Six wickets for 26 runs, must have been a non-playing cricket country, Namibia, Argentina, France maybe.

Some people have heard of legends of the silver screen. Film legends ? Lucky opportunists ? Highly skilled artists ?...although to my mind, I think the terminology of them being a legend is incorrect. 'Celebrities', usually born out of the media hype about TV personalites, usually are just 5 minute wonders, but whose PR machine trundles them as far as possible to the grave. Most are over-rated and over-blown by a belief in their own self-importance and unfortunately the public don't help matters, and the machinery surrounding them fuels that belief. Whether you admire people like Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest in Burma for years, Mother Theresa and her work in Calcutta, or any other member of mankind who has exemplified various qualities of the human spirit or not, I think that you will agree that the term 'legend' or 'celebrity' applied to them would be not only demeaning but insulting. We are lucky. By the accident of our birth and the opportunities that life and our situation has provided, we are highly fortunate. The guy who spent his whole working life down a pit or mine and emerged only to cough up his life's blood at the end or the girl who just happened to be born in a devastatingly poor province and who has spent her days since the age of 9 in the fields, ankle deep in water-snake and leech-infested rice paddy waters, given three babies by men in the village and deserted, finding the rest of her life to be completely unsupported by the government, provincial body or any NGO scheme that might ease her predicament and stays to look after her family or even travels to the city to use her body.............these people are not celebrities or legends in any meaning of the words, but are worthy of our praise, our sympathy and our admiration. We are not distanced from them. Maybe you have had the honour of knowing one or two of these ladies. Maybe you have contributed to the miner's hell of a short life whenever you have turned on a light switch. And don't tell me that this is the inevitable march of technology. That is a load of bollocks. For the most part, we can reverse any man-made destructive mechanism, if we have the will. These are the systems in the world that crush people. And we are all part of those systems whether we like it or not. Goverments do only what people are prepared to bear. If they pass that point, they're gone. Celebrities are just the tinsle to distract us from being constantly aware that we are not killing this earth, only ourselves as a life form. So what do we do ? Party on ? I think we need to make a few changes and the nature of these changes necessitates us to start with ourselves. Yes, party on, but not with the light switch turned off between our ears.
