Quote: from thaiaficionado on 6:11 am on Aug. 21, 2009 There's a Farang Shakedown Detail operating on Sukhumvit Road......Does he expect me to drive 130 kph in the bike lane?
But you were breaking the law by riding your bike at 10km/h over the speed limit ! Don't get me wrong, I know they would probably stop you even if you weren't speeding but in the case you highlight you were breaking the law and the police stopped you and 'fined' you.

TA: You're overpaying at 200 baht. I get stopped at least once every trip from and to Pattaya. I always have a 100 baht bill in my right hand. When the nice policeman sees it, he grabs it, smiles and thanks me. I am on my way in 15 seconds. There have been a few that wanted 200. I just politely tell them I have no more and they have always taken what I offer. I normally am speeding so I consider it a cheap traffic fine. Oh, and I never speak Thai.

It's easier to pay 200 baht to go through the regular system. Although I ask myself if it's good to be guilty of contributing to corruption...

Thanks for the tip Chuck, I'll try 100 next time, don't want to be a LDOP. Actually Meaty, the limit was 80, and I don't want to contribute to corruption either, but TIT.

That's what I don't understand. You don't want to contribute to corruption, but you shove 200 baht in the officer's pocket?

The fallacy is the idea that you will have ANY effect, either encouraging corruption, or discouraging it by your not paying, or paying, the bribe. Once you are in the position, it's too late to hope to influence anything more significant than your own immediate survival. Only those who 'vote with their feet', and then only if they form a significant majority, can have ANY effect on corruption. Translated, that means you leave Thailand if you truly don't want to be part of the perpetuation of the problem. hs

I presume doc lub is claiming we are contributing to the delinquency of police by paying bribes??? (I am on ignore so I can only surmise.) Somebody might want to ask him how he feels about paying bar fines and taking his sex tour customers to a bar where they will consort with ladies of the evening. These same bars are also paying the police a stipend to remain trouble free, so is his support of a particular bar also feeding the frenzy of the BIB? Bribery is endemic to the Thai culture. Has anybody tried to get anything out of Customs lately? It cost us 5,000 baht to get a perfectly legal duty free shipment released from Customs in BKK. Handling charge is what they called it. We had to pay the Land Office "gasoline" money before they would do their assigned jobs and come to our land and survey it. Live with it or live in another country.

My last trafffic ticket in California, thanks to good ol unmarked CHPs, was 100 dollars and 3 points. 3300 baht down the drain while overtaking passing a long 3x semi trailer trucks on I-5 at 84 mph; aka over the 75 speed limit. I gladly pay the low on the spot fine and go without court write up. Heck tons of people speed out of Bangkok to Patts, Korat etc ! and as well as drink and drive too too much ! Look a SongKran highway accident stats ! right up there with July 4th and X-Mas USA partiers hittin the road. Thailand traffic fines are a lot less severe than many think !

The country is the world's second-largest producer after Afghanistan, which accounts for 90 percent of world output. Myanmar is also a major source of methamphetamine. Much of it is trafficked to neighboring Thailand where abuse of the drug is rampant. bad indeed !
