Hey what do you expect from a country that puts Jerry Lewis as their favorite comedian?
Anyhow, it seems your misses attitude is the same as mine. In fact, a couple of months ago she stated that "I hate Thai people" mainly this comes from the class attitude especially in the retail stores and from seeing and living in the USA and not having to deal with this crap.

I see a lot of posters have negative thoughts about a class system per se.
On the contrary I believe it gives the average Thai a sense of place in society that helps them deal with each other and in particular when to acquiesce and when not to etc. I am sure the members can think of thousands of examples of how Thais have made decisions based on the relationship ofthemselves to another's position in society.
The egalitarian West has been trying to do away with class for years. Unfortunately it is farcical as whilst God made us all equal he did not intend for us to stay that way.
Some will become rich, some learned, some highly skilled, some skidrow bums. There is a hierarchy in society and every nation has its own way to recognise and deal with that.
My own nation gives knighthoods and honours. Unfortunately the sad PC govt are to do away with them as being elitist. Fatty Two Jags, Deputy PM will still require his chauffeur driven limos though and the PMs classical education and barrister training will still show he is not working class. Different badges of rank, same game.
It exists everywhere and needs to be understood in thailand as it drives so much of what we see every day.

BKK Banger, you've made good points. But ever since I learned of the type and extent (edit in) of the class system here, my attitude has been, okay, I accept it while i'm living here, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. And I don't.
The West may be farcical in their egalitarianism, but at least it has moved away (or in the process of moving away) from feudalism, which I dislike. Developed countries have classes based on money, among other things like skill and merit, and this doesn't seem as unkind. Very few people in the West would comment that complete strangers getting into the lift with them are 'low class' based on behaviour,.
It also seems that the implication that Thai society works (for Thais only) if it doesn't change, or else we would have some sort of breakdown or upheaval.
Just MHO.
It's interesting that you brought up the UK. I have a friend living there who's not British and is a theatre/stage/television/radio spot actor. She was unpleasantly surprised when came to LOS for the first time to visit, when I told her about the feudal system here. She did not like to hear what I was telling her.
She herself is in a minority (ethnic) group that on the whole doesn't do too well in the theatre scene in the UK compared to another minority group, because of cultural, historical reasons or whatever.
Perhaps, because of this, she belongs to a certain 'class' as well?
