I think you are from Singapore. And you make it out that Singapore is a classless society. I dont really think that is true. I have found that Singaporeans look down on people - particularly asians from Indonesia, Phillipines, Thailand and India.
Forgetting racism (which I think is much less prevalent in Thailand than other countries), this whole problem of class it pretty complicated.
For instance, we should all judge people on how they ACT rather than looks, clothing, education etc. However, trailer park girls tend to dress trashy - so the 2 are easily associated.
I can just see someone turning up to the RT dressed as a slob, then dry humping some Thai hooker in the bar, and jumping on the pole in the gogo bar to show everyone his fat white ass. Then coming back to the forum and claiming that half the RT didnt talk to him and were a bunch of snobs.
At the end of the day, if you dress like a slob, and act like a slob dont be surprised if people treat you like a slob without bothering to find out that much about you.

Actually no, what I wrote early on was 'my own (Singers) is westernised to a large extent and probably the most egalitarian in this part of the world.'
I didn't mean or imply that it is classless. What I meant, among other things, is that it's not feudal like LOS.
If anything, Singapore has a large middle class with several levels within it. Unlike Thailand, with extremes of very rich to very poor.
Singaporeans who look down on other asians: a matter of racism, primarily I think, but can be linked to money/class as well.
I used to think that racism in Thailand is much less prevalent than in other countries too, but I've learnt a lot more since then. It's complex, and that would be getting beyond the scope of my original post and my reason for starting the thread.
But I would be happy to talk about this over a beer at an RT or something 
Agree with you about behaviour, which is also linked to socio-economic status, like the trailer park girls example. And yes, the whole problem of class is pretty complicated.

Ok.... and probably a valid observation that the emergence of a large middle class is probably a prerequisite for the erosion of entrenched class systems. Either that or a revolution - a process not particular popular these days.

I think that it is a part of human nature-may it be a good or not a good part, that is another question- to try to differentiate themselselves from other individuals.
With the various possibilities that we have to do so, some kind of concurrence evolves.
The result is the already discussed vertical and horizontal division.
I also agree with BKKBangers thoughts, that any sort of 'social classification' gives people a fixpoint for their navigation in life.
Whenever we meet somebody new we will automatically make some kind of classification according to our own set of standards and values.
The point that p*sses me off (on the very few occasions I get p*ssed in LOS  ) in the Thai society is that a lot of 'high-so' people comment on others as if they were 'unworthy' beings, just because of their social background.
(Just to illustrate these thoughts: when I happened to meet my TGF, some ignorant woman relative of mine told me, I should never think about starting something serious with 'this' girl as she was working as a sales person in a dept. store and these girls wre just whores. 3 years after I still very happy to be with her  )
For those with a so-called 'low class' background will have difficulties ever to overcome these frontiers, as chances are just TOO unequal.

In the only giving even the disadvantaged classes access to equal chances will break up these 'class frontiers'

Look to the US, wiktha chance for a new start 200 yrs ago, the way to equality is still a difficult one for coloured people.

Yes, I agree - certain conditions have to be met: a brain, spending less time on self-pity, and, oh yeah, less listening to those telling you "It's not your fault, someone else is to blame"
