There are three mysterious building in Bangkok that I am very curious about.

1) The hugh art deco Gotham City looking building on Asoke and Sukhumvit. Beautiful building finished about 3 eyars ago. Grandiose by any standards, but completely empty.

2) The shell of of a 10 story building in the empty lot between Sukhumvit Soi 8 and 4. Squatters used to live there. That has been there since my '96 when I lived on Soi 8.

3) Ratchada. A huge regtangular building on Ratchada across the street from Robinsons and Carrefour. Damn thing as never finished.

Are these buildings jinxed. Did something happen that caused the builders or owners to be superstitious.

1) Developers ran out of money....though there is regular talk that this project will be revived...can't remember the name of it...but it's very well known. Certainly Not finished by any stretch of the imagination....

2) Developers ran out of money

3) Developers ran out of money...circa 1985...I'm sure this one was prior to the crash...the shopping centre part was nearly finished, but the accommodation high rises are shells. Costs more to demolish that to leave...and noone will buy it.

Now...that's enough threads for one day surely.

What about the hotel on the Thonburi bank...west of the Peninsular, built independantly for Sofitel to run, then found to be sinking. Never occupied, partially fitted out I believe.

Got an outside elevator overlooking the river, and a sort of Star Ship Enterprise restaurant at the top.

Anybody ever noticed the lights are never on??

This project will be revived shortly. It has been said that new contracts have been signed.
Those projects all in addition to 800 (!!) other unfinished buildings in BKK. (According to BKK Post) Most abondened during the 97/98 crisis. A suggestion was made by some NGO's to use them for cheap housing projects. Give it a few years, they will still be there..

Depends on the building. If they've got all the windows in, then they have chance. But most of the buildings that only got as fall as steel-and-concrete are past their sehlf-life and need to come down.

Interesting subject as I was wondering if the buildings should be torn down after awhile.

Brother Hermanolobo could fly the spaceship restaurant if this building fell down. 5555!

Yes, in a normal country with proper zoning or government control, they would be required to either be completed or torn down, but this is Thailand.

In Regards, to the hotel on the river bank. Word has it that in order to make more profit on the project the cement was substandard and too much sand was used, intsead on on-going inspections, it failed structual inspections after completion. I do not know how they plan to fix that one, too bad it is a nice design. I expect very low rates on this baby.

BigDUSA, I think this will be a hotel in BKK that even you will be able to afford, you will just never know if your room rate includes the one-time "E" ticket river plunge ride.

howdy.

its "the lakes" and about 4 blocks inside (just before the jaguar dealer ship).

they actually sold most of it in a few hours only... people were quite upset, because at the official presentation were no more apartments left.

a damn good marketing job!! thanks to virtual programming and a great presentation all around. at the time they sold ALL, there was just the skeleton standing. now you can see a lot of work being done, completition is scheduled for end of august 04.

but prices were 45% below going rates. great investment, safe bet that they are going to double in value within short time.

the marble building on the front corner, IMHO one of the best locations in downtown bangkok, there is still a neverending battle going on between banks and several owners. this according to the people at richard ellis (responsible for the lakes).

imagine how fast this will be snatched up. richard ellis, however is working on it and trying to resolve the situation.

I know this, because a friend of mine bought an apartment and I went with him to the presentation.
