I'm sure this has been noticed before (at least< I hope so, since I'm seeking an answer), but I have been noticing that a great many BGs, but also normal Thais (usually kids) display the kind of 'thumb-and-index-finger' symbol similar to an 'L' (imagine the 'L' for 'Loser' on the forehead). In my neck of the woods, this is usually a gang-type symbol, though I highly doubt that this symbol in LOS is due to a cultural exchange between crips/bloods and Thai teens. Does anyone know what it means, as I have even seen it done by the youngest brother of a friend of mine while taking her pictures at her wedding. Anyone have any idea what this is all about?

There are always gangs everywhere, but I won't worry about in Thailand. Especially in Thailand. What are they going to do? Do a drive by at your hotel and shoot you with what?? a water gun?? ha ha ha!! All joking aside...... maybe they are just mimicking what they see on MTV!! ha ha ha!! And I'm not sure that making some sort of hand gesture will prevent their soul from being stolen if they believe that. At least, I've never heard about it before. Guess I'll have to ask my relatives about this one!! I just think they are doing that silly hand gesture you find many asians doing. The "James Bond" gun type look with the "L"!! ha ha ha!! And while they are at it, they might as well do the "classic" two finger mickey mouse or peace symbol lookin' hand gesture!! ha ha ha!! Hey!! At least it's not the middle finger!! ha ha ha!!!

No, they're just trying to say 'hang loose'. ABC, you've got to teach them the right way to do it.

When my TGF does it in front of my face, with my chin resting in the "V" of her thumb and forefinger, it means "smile." She's doing this in an old photo of us from the 1st time we met. She explained to me later that's what she meant by it. I wasn't really smiling in that photo, more a "deer in the headlights" look, lol! - Balls

It's to frame the face. You may have seen photographers doing it with the thumb and forfinger of both hands to form the shot. Asians also use different fingers to show numbers the thumb being One through to Five. But get this Six is the thumb and little finger raised and the other three fingers curled in.

And do you know how to show the number '8' with one hand (which is appropriate here) ? Or 7 or 9 or 10 for that matter...?
