I remember reading on here somewhere that there is very little wine available in Thailand and what there is,is very expensive. Would I  be allowed to bring a couple of bottles with me when I come over or is that not allowed? I seem to remember it had something to do with the Thai Government but I can't remember.
Thanks for any advice.

1. Wine became a fad for Thai yuppies about 10 years ago and the government responded by jacking up the taxes exorbidantly. They didn't roll this back when the economic crunch hit in 97, however, the importers quit bringing in anything decent, so now the selection is very poor while prices remain outrageous.

2. Good wine does not travel well to this part of the world, temperature fluctuations during container transport damage the wine, and importers store it improperly (there are exceptions.) So buying good wine here if you can find it is chancy.

3. If you MUST have good wine in South East Asia the very best place to go is Vientiene, Laos. There the French colonial traditions have survived, and very good French wines can be had along with French cheeses and pastries (locally bakes in French patiseries) -- this helps to make up for the lousy nightlife. (See the thread about a girl named Pookie)

This of course is just across the Mekong river from Nong Khai, Thailand and there is a Friendship Bridge, so you can make a day trip to Vientiene.

Have to agree with "Cj" that wines do not seem to travel well here, nonetheless there are a fair selection available, probably the best at Central Dept. Store, off the chidlom sky train station - where they have plenty of French/Italian/Chilean/American and my preference Australian wines,  but by and large around double what they cost in country of origin. I have had friends bring up a couple of bottles often, and no problem - dont bother to declare then tho. - Oh, and a p.s. - If you do take a good Cab Sav. to some Thai restaurant, keep the glass handy to you, otherwise some well intentioned young waiter will sneak up and drop some ice in it for you !

i usually bring all my wines from europe or get it brought over by freinds. usually there is no problem at the immigration. only once the got me with about 30 bottles of wine in my bags. they send me to declare them at the airport tax office which is right in the middle between terminal 1 and 2. so after realising that nobody is accompaning me to this place i just walked out past the immigration officer at terminal 2. this way i did not have to declare the wines, which saved me about usd 500.
i store all my wines in second refrigerator. this is the only way you can make sure they maintain a certain quality. even the best restaurants do it that way here. if you want to drink the wine open it 1 hour before and it will come up, otherwise 20 seconds in the microwave will also do the deed. sounds unconventional, i know, but works pretty well, as it does not harm the quality that much compared to storing it somewhere else at this temperatures!
