I was at a business meeting and a farang guy says that he was born and raised in Thailand. Little did he know that someone in the room speaks Thai (me) so I say, “Sawatdeekrup”
He looks startled, then replies in true farang accent, “So-what-dee,” and then offers this advice, “You didn’t say it right, you said the feminine phrase.”
“No, I said krup not kha.”
“That’s what you say if you’re a woman. I said so-what-dee. That’s what a man says.”
Yeah, a rude man or a tourist... not a native Thai...
Is it possible for someone born and raised in Thailand to be so ignorant of the language?
Then I started thinking that maybe his ‘born and raised in Thailand’ story is just a cover for frequent trips to LOS. I don't know if that's the case but it'd be a good one...

No, I'm not Stickman,
As for the nickname... A while back I wrote a set of field reports that were unusually detailed and someone suggested that if there were ever an opening for the position of nightlife correspondant that I apply.
I talked to the Bangkok Post about replacing Trink, but they were not interested. Since I couldn't have the job I figured I might at least have the title.

Born in Thailand of two farang parents, goes to International school, leaves at the age of 10 or so....parents never encouraged any contact with the locals....

I see guys on tv all the time born in the USA that know sh_t about English. Just listen to some of those guys coming from poor neighnorhoods singing rap songs. (I am sure it happens in most places. I just see more English-language TV.)
So, yes, what Yurune says is common.

I was very tempted to launch into more Thai, but I got the sense that he was not comfortable with it, and it is not in my best interest to cause any loss of "face" to this individual.
I didn't know those International Schools were that isolated...

The schools aren't necessarily isolated...but some of the people who attend them are.
There is a whole community of expat workers living in Bangkok, that hardly ever set foot on the street....apartment picked up by driver to the office, dropped at a restaurant to meet someone for dinner, taken home by driver, British Club on the weekends. these people never see P4P despite what all of you might think. I've worked with quite a few.....
Sad existance in my book, but I'd take the salary............
having said that I met a guy on the weekend who went to bangkok Pattana for 3 years in the mid nineties, and didn't know the first thing about Bangkok or speaking Thai.
