I believe it is the law to carry your passport at all times, (or may be an official form of ID) which is only common sense and normal in most countries around the world other than the UK.

In Thailand I have to weigh up the pro’s & con’s of what will happen if I loose it or get caught without it.

If I loose it I will have to go to the Thai police and then the embassy loosing a day or so of my holiday, on the other hand if I get stopped without it the worst that can happen is the police will take me back to my hotel to get it and a fine, from what I have herd in such a situation is the police will phone your hotel for clarification as it is normal for hotels to photocopy your passport.

It is normal for me to keep it in the room safe or hotel safety deposit box and not carry it with me and yet I still managed to loose it twice fortunately I was able to find it, yet I have never been stopped and asked to produce it, so I compromise I keep a photocopy in my wallet with a hotel business card and don’t go where I shouldn’t increasing the probability of being stopped.

I still think the risk of what will happen if I get stopped without my passport is a lot less than the hassle I will have if I loose it.

I never carry my original passport (just a photocopy) in LOS and I've never been asked for it, even when I got a lousy ticket for tossing a cigarette butt on the Suk! I even saved that ticket as a souvenir.

I average 6 trips a year to Bkk over the last 14 years and have never had anyone ask for the passport except when I check into the hotel or cash a traveler's check. I do carry a color photocopy of the first page of the passport. I think the risk of carrying it all of the time is far greater than getting caught in a raid and not being able to produce it on the spot. The safest place for it is in a safe at the hotel.

hmm, what about the USA, Canada, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France ?, just to name a few

I've even gone to Mexico w/o carrying a passport before, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're of Latin persuasion and don't have good ID to get back into the USA

Here's the Thai Visa.com rules about Work Permits which probably isn't all too dissimilar to the rules concerning Passports. I get by on my LOS driver's license which is valid for 5 years

also Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong (to add to the above)

LY,

The police can ask you to show an ID card or a passport at any moment in France.

I am not sure about the other countries, but in France, it is mandatory to carry a document that can help to establish your identity and a driving licence IS NOT considered as an acceptable ID document by the police in France.

I'm sure that even in the UK the police can ask for your passport at any time (if you're obviously not a UK resident), but

I think they would be much more lenient and accept a photocopy or even escort you to where your passport is

In LOS, they would just want the bribe to overlook it, or worse (if you'd been bogged in a raid)

I used my driver's license to make a large financial transaction just last Friday here in LOS

I only had to use my passport to open my bank accounts, but haven't used my passport for anything other than getting a new visa every year. I had to go searching for it the other week, cause that's how long it's been just sitting around in a drawer somehere

so far it's been easier in LOS, but I don't normally go to clubs that get raided. I've got LOS social security card etc., so shouldn't be a worry

Isee
I've read that if you carry a photocopy of your passport, you should also get a photocopy of your entry stamp - so no arguments about whether you are overstaying your visa.

Only time I''ve been asked for ID was when I went into CM2.

LY,

You were wrong for France, but also for the Netherlands (since June 1994), Belgium and Luxemburg (at least). All the citizens from those countries must carry an ID card or a passport, even when they stay in their own country...
