Arriving in bkk on the 19th. I have MS Word files & Access database files as well as others that I will need to use while there,, 1 month. I'm wondering if I can get by using pc's in internet cafes & hotels or whether I should bring a laptop. If I bring a laptop, do many hotels provide internet connection? Thanks.

PC at internet shops are loaded with spy ware, keystroke tracker. Bring your own laptop. High end hotels provide in room connection.

I would not count on Access being available on PC's at Internet Cafe's, although some may have it.

There are plenty of places with cheap internet access in the tourist areas. Just bring your own files & essential programs on CD.
If you must bring your laptop a few cafes will let you plug it in. Most will not. Only the top-end hotels have in-room connections. You also have the risk of damage in transit and theft... will it fit in the room safe?

Depending on the type of work you have to do, one other solution could be to buy an external hard disk drive where you can store everything you need before leaving your country and that you will probably be able to connect on an USB port in some internet cafes.
This kind of device is easier to carry and store in a safe than a notebook.
You should also consider some other solutions mentioned in the following thread:

PS: You should of course also take into consideration the previous remarks (spyware...) and be very careful when working with the computers in any internet cafe, especially about viruses.

Do you have any evidence that these shops really do this kind of stuff?
When I was there I seemed to know at least as much as the girls running the place.

Never forget them downloading my pics to burn to a cd (nothing really illegal or such). They used the computer in the back as the one with the burner was in use and I was tired of waiting. I was watching while they did this. Told them to please erase the pics after. Went back to the computer with all the rest that I was working on and went through the network to the back computer to check the files. Had to repeat to them to please erase the files. They looked a bit surprised and presto a second later they had deleted them. Well I hope but they could have just moved them who really knows and I don't really care.
As far as storage I am taking a camera with a 1 gig flash card. Very small and I have found I can use it both as storage for pics plus store files on it at the same time. Take along a small USB card reader. Can't get much smaller then a flash card
Regarding my thread about Remote Desktop your password and login are NOT stored on the computer you are using. Even if they did have a keystroke reader running it would still be very hard to hack my computer. The reason is I copy and past my ip address that I get from an email that is sent from my computer back to myself. I then read my source code for that email from the web using
http://www.mail2web.com/ my computer is set to leave the emails on the server so I can read them remotely. With the source I copy and past my ip into windows explorer then add a non standard port number I have set up. End it with /tsweb and click go.
End up with a xp pro login screen with both the login and password spaces being blank. Enter my login and password to login to my computer.
Before I ever finish at any internet shop I clear the history/cookies/ and cache of the computer.
