Folks I have a decision to make but I need some quick info. to help me decide.
I have a choice to extend my current contract (in Taiwan) for 6 or 12 months when it expires in Jan 2005.
I was planning to move to Bkk at the end of my current contract and take a 3-6 month break. However, my decision is based,in part, on the progress of the proposed Rail Link to the new airport ( & possible other construction projects).
Three questions:
1) Does anybody have any further reliable information regarding the timescale (tender returns, design, construction start dates etc) of this project
2) Where can I get a listing of all the expat construction companies in Bkk (contractors, consultants, project managers). I have looked at the Yellow Pages but this is not particularly helpful.
3) Does anybody know if companies are looking for staff and if so when?
My apologies for this purely selfish request but I know there are a few construction guys on this forum.
I could of course just quit and come to Bkk anyway but an extra 6mths expat salary in Taiwan would be a few years free living in Thailand.

If it was me regardless of the answers to your questions, I'd choose the extension based on your last sentence alone. Seems like the obvious choice to me.

Tender submission dates on the airport rail link were put back to later this month.. quite a large addendum I believe... Don't know planned lead times to engage the contractor
Next time you are in Bkk go to a Lighthouse Club (construction industry persons) monthly meeting.. 2nd Wed of each month at the Bulls Head from about 7pm... or go to a SPET (society of professional engineers thailand) function which are held regulary as well... not sure when but I can find out.... both these meetings are basically just an excuse for a piss up

The due date for the Tender is 18 Nov 2004. Opening is presumed to happen that day or within days. Negotiations with the low bidders might take a bit of time SRT is a very conservative organization, could be problems.
Construction is still scheduled to start at the beginning of next year, also unlikely.
Would not dare to give advice on what someone should do about earning money. In this case it may be that the bird in hand is worth much more than the one in the bush. And there are a number of us beating those bushes at the moment. At least with a job you can afford to make those R&R trips to BKK or anywhere else.

Gator - I do not need the money that 6-12 months in Taiwan will bring. It would be nice but I have enough cash available to take some time off work. It may be easy money but I have been here for 3.5 yrs & Taiwan is not the most exciting place on the planet. I have other reasons for wanting to move to BKK sooner rather than later. They are not big but deserve consideration.
KJ/Quick Single - I have considered Lighthouse Club but am not in BKK on wednesday evenings normally. I may have to make an exception. Reading between the lines it seems that the project may start in earnest in March/April time. Sort of 'limbo-time' for me.
I will be in BKK a couple of times between now & Xmas. Just have to keep my ear to the ground!!

My company is also involved with this new airport rail link via 3 of the largest M7E contractors. We have been told to chop 25% of our price (what the f__k) the way we read it is there MAY be funding problems. But saying that it will go ahead, but may be delayed?? After all this is Thailand.
