On my last trip I ventured into the 'live animals' section of Chatuchak (more like 'stumbled' - that place is atrociously big), and came upon a couple of pet stores selling dogs - there were particularly two incredibly cute husky puppies that caught my eye, and I spent 20 minutes playing with each.... but I digress...

If I planned on purchasing a dog (clearly, I don't care about pedigree) over there (or, otherwise acquiring it), what's are the hoops I might have to jump through bringing it back to the US (California) ?

I would assume that it needs proof of a ton of vaccinations, etc... but are there any particular regulations for an animal arriving from Thailand? I mean, they never stopped me, but what about the dog?

They'd probably give the pooch a cavity check to make sure you're not sneaking any naughty narcotics in the dog's pooper which is a doggone shame.

Other than the absence of leash laws in LOS what caught my attention in Pattaya was a sign next to the pier at the beginning of Walking Street that stated "no rabies zone". WTF!

If you are foaming at the mouth, you cannot go out on the pier.

Something about infecting the rats and fish.

Mr Alan
If you plan to import a pet, please get a copy of the CBP brochure Pets and Wildlife. http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/toolbox/publications/travel/pets.ctt/pets.pdf
You should also check with state, county, and local authorities to learn if their restrictions and prohibitions on pets are stricter than federal requirements.

Importing animals is closely regulated for public health reasons and also for the well being of the animals. There are restrictions and prohibitions on bringing many species into the United States.

Dogs must also be free of evidence of diseases that could be communicable to humans. Puppies must be confined at a place of the owner’s choosing, which can be a private residence, until they are three months old and then they must be vaccinated against rabies. The puppy will then have to stay in confinement for another 30 days following the vaccination. However, if the owner uses a Mac, confinement must be for 60 days (many Macs users are known to be rabid).

Dogs older than three months must get a rabies vaccination at least 30 days before they come to the United States and must be accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate if coming from a country that is not rabies-free. This certificate should identify the dog, show the date of vaccination, the date it expires (there are one-year and three-year vaccinations), and be signed by a licensed veterinarian. If the certificate does not have an expiration date, CBP will accept it as long as the dog was vaccinated 12 months or less before coming to the United States. Dogs coming from rabies free countries do not have to be vaccinated.

Harry, are we to take it that even Thai dogs are better than their Farang counterparts? Perhaps they're more subservient and less willful than their Western cousins. But have you learned nothing from this forum? Surely there's a cuter dog just around the corner. And perhaps you should cast your eyes over the canine freelancers which are to be found on every street corner. They're good to go for a tin of Pedigree Chum or a handful of Bonios.
Rethink your strategy of getting one from a shop. I'll paraphrase for you. You can take the dog out of the shop, but you can't take the shop from out of the dog. And whatever happens, I hope you don't get a bitch that's only after your choccy drops and a bigger kennel.

ROTFLOL!

The scary thing is that Hugh's 'advice' would perfectly apply to my day at jatuchak today. Saw a few cute Huskies, then saw some equally cute freelancers (kennel-free puppies).... Prky and fun puppie, and I'm really torn big time. The cutest little guy. 3 months old. Vaccinated. Can get certificate.

$300, negotiable (of course).

Need to know if Hotel will let me bring him. Need to check with airline (I think he can fit in carry on pouch).

Damn!

Yes, Harry. You'll need to check if the Hotel will charge a joiner fee. Let us know which ones are dog friendly.
