So I have a "Meet the Parents' scenario in the making. I'm going up to Sukhothai to meet her parents. I am taking 3 weeks off at the office to head up country. no running water, maybe electricity, hut, mosquitos, etc. Rice farmers (surprise). So has anyone been up there? Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. Torq

It's fun, for 3-5 days. Be sure to bring malaria medication, and take it regularly as prescribed. You *will* get bitten by mosquitos. The village experience can be nice - I just had it by proxy, by visiting a friend of mine who had a regular house, with running water, electricity, etc... but we went to visit more upcountry residences, and it's certainly interesting. I'm sure others will have more immersed experiences to share, and be sure to use the Fine Search Engine: http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/search.cgi Harry

But sure be ready to see your wallet bleeding almost to death.....the mighty upcountry trip..it's a kind of institution for farangs dating a TG... Btw, if the family has no running water, then no doubt their only asset is between your TG legs!

http://www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk/Country/Thailand_Malaria_Map.htm Malaria is a fatal disease, and it only takes one infected mosquito to bite you for you to contract it. Even if you do take malaria prophylaxis (larium or doxycycline) you still need urgent hospital care if you are bitten by a malarial mossie, but you are less likely to die of the disease. The best protection is achieved by covering up exposed skin when the mossies are out, sleeping under a decent impregnated mossie net - best to take your own as only the tiniest hole in a net is needed for the blighters to find their way through to you - and by using mossie repellant frequently. 50% deet seems to work well on your skin, though you can use stronger stuff to spray your clothes. Malaria is not to be taken lightly. Local people are unlikely to admit that they have a malarial mosquito problem as this would kill their tourist trade, so be prepared to protect yourself and use common sense when you're in Thailand about how to minimise the risk to yourself. Many people travel to malarial areas of the world without taking anti-malarials or other precautions, and come home again without malaria. But as it only requires one bite to infect you, it seems only sensible to do what you can to keep yourself safe! Buy DEET based insect repellent (you can also get it in BKK), and be safe. Harry

IMHO, Meet the parents but stay in a hotel. Even if this is THE trip, they won't mind the falang staying in a place he's more accustomed to. And I don't think they would be the least bit offended.

Take a coupla bottles of Red Label (Black, if you feel particularly generous!) and be prepared to visit the local market to buy lotsa chickens, veggies, half a pig, other food items, the odd packet of fags and you'll probably have to drop one or two Baht 1k into the elder family members. I wouldn't drink too much of the local hooch (depends how strong yer gut n' liver are), sip a bit and pass the bowl on. Watch out for the betle nut look-a-like stuff as it may have a narcotic effect, anyway it makes yer gums red! It might cost you a few Baht but there again you'll experience the " feel good" factor and you'll be havin' fun, wont yah! Cheers PS. You'll probably have to be celebate for the few days up there. PPS. Take a flashlight/torch to see you're way to the bog at night! PPPS. Incidentally Suk' has a very picturesque airport

Hi Torq, I second Brocher's idea about the whisky. Bringing booze to a family party upcountry is a good idea... I have found out that some of my Thai friends of mine (male+female) consider Black (which I like) a waste of money and have asked me on several occasionsto save the money and buy 100 Pipers...

Would it be a good idea to bring along some anti-diarrheal medicine like Imodium A-D when you go to the country side? And may be a couple rolls of toilet paper.

I was up near there last spring and met some very nice people but sleeping on the floor, cold showering with a bucket and shitting in a squatter is a drag by day 2. Its also v-e-r-y boring unless you have a good command of Thai. It was worth doing because its the real Thailand but I'm not in a hurry to do it again.

If I were you, I would stay in BKK and give your TG a videocam, and tell her to shoot some video up country, and bring it back for you to look at.
