Is this happening to some of the members ???? I would like your views ? From Stickman's latest:- I bumped into a friend on the skytrain on Friday who I hadn't seen in awhile and he mentioned that after 5 years in Thailand, it might be time to move on. 15 minutes later an Aussie friend called, saying that he was returning to Kangarooland the next day as his holiday had come to an end. Asking when he would be back, he said that he wasn't sure he would be. He'd been making two trips a year for the last five years but found himself slowly going off Thailand. Interesting, eh? There seems to be a bit of a trend with people who came here in the late '90s returning home or choosing elsewhere for their holidays. Isolated cases ? If not I wonder why ?

Thailand is not for everyone... It requires a degree of self control to lead a normal life (however, you might describe that) It is also a very difficult place to make money (and being poor in Thailand is not much fun) Often people who live here a long time become to believe that ''An intelligent hell is better than a stupid paradise" Personally I think Stick is struggling with his own mid-life crisis.

For me the toughest part of dealing with the BG is the language barrier. On vacation I'm not going to learn the language and not being able to talk to the women gets old after a while. When I come here to live in two years, I will learn the language. The women I've meet are not intellectually curious. How often do you see a women reading the newspaper or a book? I realize I'm dealing with BG whose talents lie in a different direction. Daily living in LOS and BKK especially could be a drag. Low wages, traffic, noise, outsider always looking in.

Well, If you pay some more money you could get some multi-talent that could discuss Sartre or Kirkegaard with you...

My friend and I just returned from LOS and were imagining how long we would have to stay in LOS to get tired of it. I'd give myself maybe 6 months, before I tired of the whole P4P seen, traffic, pollution, and cultural barriers. I'd only stay if I had "alot" of money, and I don't know how long I'd last. Just "getting by" in LOS would be terrible. I can't imagine myself trying to have a "real" and meaningful relationship with a bar or gogo girl. Before you comment, this is only my opinion and there are always exceptions. Sure they are sweet and the sex is great, as long as the baht is flowing. You pay for the fantasy. I've seen the darkside. But can you imagine yourself with a 23yr old girl with a 6th grade education, and no real goals? Of course, you can hook up with an older TG (30+) who's looking to get out of the business. Besides, these young girls love to party and play their headgames, no matter if Thailand, America, or where ever. If was gonna be in LOS longterm, I'd have to eventually find myself a regular TG, and just P4P on the side.

8 years and still enjoying every minute of it. The key is to make frequent trips back home to keep the balance. Plenty of hobbies and sports are important as well.

kiNHoy, You make a very good reply. I have to agree 100% with what you say. Stickman talked about antipodean friends who were falling out of love with the country after about five years. This time period is roughly the same as mine, I have made 15 visits. My last one was agood one with plenty of positive things happening. There are however a few items that are taking the gloss off the country. Since about the end of 2002 I have been unhappy with the restrictive closing hours and events like urine testing. I like looking at naked women so the 'no-showing' policy has also pissed me off. Two other far more important events I find more disturbing. Firstly the loss of life in the dubious drugs campaign. Secondly the deaths of so many Muslims in the south in suspicious circumstances in the last week of October. (I don't want to hear any pathetic anti-muslim shit from 'rednecks' either - they'll just thread-fvck an important debate). At a time when I have come to terms with accepting the Thais for the way they are rather than how I would like them to be I too am wondering IF I will return?

Whether that's original or not, it is, hands down, the best line I have ever heard about Thailand. After a dozen years here, I'd say that's it in one.

In some ways much has changed perhaps, in other ways not at all. If you refer to Abrak & Kinhoy's postings they say about it all ?
