Where is the best place in Bangkok to watch Muay Thai fights? I only have a short stay in Thailand and would like to go to watch an event. Are there any (English language) websites with information about events, fighters, tickets, etc? Thank you. prsit

Not quite what you're asking for, but... http://www.frommers.com Type "Bangkok" into the search window. They cover the basics of where to go and how much it costs. Most of the Frommers Thailand volume is featured on the website for free.

Lumphini stadium on tuesday, friday, and saturday nights, fights start at 7pm. Friday are the top fights. I've been there twice, and recommend the tourist section, it's bt1500, but you are ringside, and can get better pictures. Take a taxi there, about bt100, but be real careful taking a taxi back. Most drivers will not use the meter, so make sure you negotiate the price going back. I've had to walk over to the night market to get a fair cab price going back. Muey thai is definately something not to miss.

Thank you for your help friends. Koolbreez, I've been looking at your photo album and the Muay Thai pictures are superb. If that's the kind of view I will have then I won't be too worried about the bt1500 cost! Do you have any other pictures from the Lumphini? I usually prefer mixed martial arts (UFC or PRIDE) but the chance to watch a Muay Thai fight in Bangkok is really exciting me now. Thanks. prsit

Slightly off topic, but I was in Hua Hin at the weekend and went to a Muay Thai tournament down there. Fantastic night's entertainment. It's run by an ex Muay Thai boxer and it's staged in his gym just round the corner from that soi with all the beer bars on it. Sorry, can't remember the name. The 'arena' itself is tiny. It almost looks like a shed. When we went there were maybe 100 thai's in the audience, supplemented by 20ish curious farang. Five bouts in all. Three men's fights. A kid bout and a female fight. 300 baht, including a beer! Our seats were no more than 2 metres from ringside. Thoroughly recommend it if you're in Hua Hin.

Lumpini ringside is not normally quite that expensive... I think there might be a mark up... anyway it is academic, I think Lumpini has alaady shut down, and will be replaced by a new stadium. Rachadamnoern is the other, and holds fights about 4 nights a week - Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun if I recall correctly., A number of other stadiums including one in the north of the city, and Channel 7 hold their own fights as well, but the Rachadamnoern and Lumpini champions were prevously considered to be the best. Some of these other stadiums are free, but you really need to be Thai and keen on Muay Thai, as it is a very "Lao" experience going to watch at these places - friggin hot and just like being in Isaan (which is where most of the top fighters come from). Just a month ago, there was the final send off for lumpini; 13 champion fights on 1 card - WOW. Ringside seats are best for people who don't know much about Muay Thai and want to feel the buzz; to get the necessary angle to know what is going on, save your money (if you are actually a fighter) and sit up above in the cheap seats. You will be far better able to see footwork, angles and distance; the key bits of fighting outside and coming in for the clinch etc. Plus the buzz is much better - the Thais who know something about Muay Thai are alsmot all in the cheap seats, betting. 250b if I remember correctly. Just one thing; don't try to sit among them; they are busy doing their gambling, and you are wasting their space - sit fruther around the side. Anyone who tells you that western fighters are good with their hands and Thais aren't.... well I guess you can see for yourself the intensity of even the average level fights (which is probably what you'll be watching, since champs don't fight everyday). Have fun!

The nights fights aren't held at Lumpini, they're held at Ratchadmnoen. Any cab will know it. Prices about the same. I like it a little better than Lumpini becuase the seats have more of a bird's eye view. Lumpini is still good and is closer to Sukhumvit. Also you can wander over to the night bazaar afterwards for some food. I don't recommend ringside at either of these arenas. The middle price range seating is still very close to the ring and you'll be sitting with the Thais which makes it more exciting. Japanese tourisits tend to dominate ringside seating so I think the atmosphere there would be less Thai. After all this is Muay THAI.

funny, I always noticed that the front seats are all white people?! Totally agree on the atmosphere though - cheap seats are the place to be,. I heard Lumpini is still going, but shutting soon, and they do have fights in the evenings during the week.
