The press in my country has for the past few days reported quite a lot about a planned muslim terrorattack planned in connection to the unrest in the south parts of the Kingdom. The report claimed that terrorists had plans for attacking tourist sites in Pattaya and Phuket. Info was said to be obtained when some terrorist was arrested.
It is very worrying and disturbing info. But one realises that these people (should they even be considered part of the human race, when blowing up innocent people??!!) are coward f***s that stops at nothing. Just look at Bali. More than 200 unarmed partygoing tourists killed and when the killers where caught - they just kept laughing in court, even after given the maximum punishment. How do you stop people like that?
And of course the tourist industry is very sensitive to an attack. Just imagine if something like Bali happened at a top location in Thailand?! It would be devastating.....
It scares me. I will not stop going to LOS even if that would happen. But I fear that many many people would change their plans and go elsewhere.
I talked the other day with a very experienced travel agent who also happen to love LOS. He said that he never visits crowded places after 10 pm. Is that what we have to look forward to??
And what can be done to increase alertness and being careful?
I really really pray that these are things that will never ever happen - but with the escalation lately we must all be aware. Just the other day there was a new bomb that killed one and injured 8 people.
Scary and terrible......

It is also the same goddamn reports that came out yearly for the last three years.
If you don't care to risk being seen in public, don't go out. I for one will not cowtow to having my movements curtailed by MY OWN fears of mortality, and certainly won't blame the boogeyman, (terrorists, SARS, Bird Flu, your dreaded fear NAME HERE).
All whiny crybabys need to look inside instead of pointing the finger elswhere, and examine their own fears, instead of trying to make the world change to please their insecurities.

So you are immortal and in your mind dont give a shit if those idiots blow bombs around you?? What a statement.... ok so you dont care about your safety. But as for me being normal I feel empathy towards those who MAY suffer the risk of being in the zone where terrorist dumbnuts wants to express their way by blowing things and people to kingdom come.....
Being aware of the risks is not "making them win". Please try to reconnect your brain to working order.
Why dont you take your point and address it to the relatives of those poor sods in Bali?? Or perhaps itīs just their own fault in your textbook? And since it was not you being targeted - it doesnt matter??

Probably not a bad idea. I imagine that the MPs with the elevator to the foor with the massage rooms fall into the same category. It would be tough to find a "safe" place if that sort of stuff started to happen in Bangkok and surrounding area. IMHO.

Let's put this paranoia in different perspective. What are our chances of being killed or injured by a terrorist attack vs. being run over by a truck while crossing Sukhumvit? When your flying over here, there is a non-zero probability the plane will crash. Shit happens, and one can become a victim of random violence anywhere. Some places are inherently more dangerous than others, like south-central LA. Yes, NEP is a fire trap, terrorists only barely increase the risks of going there. The media makes us focus on the risks of terrorism much out of proportion to the actual risk.

When I was in the US Army we were taught "situational awareness". When I walk into a bar, club, movies, I look for a way OUT. Do I think I'm going to be involved with a terrorist attack, no. Fire is the #1 hazard I worry about.
One of the many lessons I drilled into my 16 y/o daughter. Know where you are and where the fire exits are located.
Don't let your ego and macho bull shit get in the way of common sense. Use your big head, your little one will follow.
