Woke up this morning and was flipping thru the news channels when I saw the reports of the earthquake and tsunamis/floods across SE Asia. I know the Phuket and Phiphi island were hit pretty bad. I hope that all members in those areas are alright. I eagerly await the first hand reports from those members that are in Thailand for a better picture of what happened.

Latest is that 55 have died in Thailand.

1000's in Sri Lanka and India. Damn.

I never felt a thing this morning.

I am due to arrive at Phuket on New Year's Eve, providing that things have begun to return to a state whereby it might be possible to go there. My hotels are both booked and paid for, as are the air fares, so I don't have much choice. I'm not sure whether refunds would be covered by insurance, as this probably comes under the heading of "Act of God". In any event, it would not be easy to book into a hotel elswhere, particularly if other tourists are relocating too. One hotel was the Holiday Village and Natural Garden Resort at Karon, the other the second week is the Leelawadee Boutique Hotel at Patong. As far as I am aware, both are at the back of the resorts on the side of hills and perhaps they have not been too badly damaged.
Is there anybody there able to give a reasonable assessment of what my chances are to firstly get on to the Island and secondly how things might be by then?

I doubt that it is wise attempting travel to Phuket even if you are able.

Watching sky news Phuket is a disaster zone and will take more than 5 day to clean up.

At present all fights to affected areas are leaving the UK empty for the purpose of evacuation, this should no affect flights to Bangkok as the only problems are in the south on the west coast including the resorts of Phi-Phi, Phuket & Krabi.

I assume you are not using a package tour operator, try to contact you hotel in the first instance, see if they are still open for business, if not ask for a refund probability is that they will not refund you but may be able arange for you alternative accomodation elsware.

Again check with your airline see what the situation is, the probability will be that they will not be allowed to fly tourists into the area as it is now covered by a state of emergency.

If you were flying via BKK it may be possible to make alternative plans, I have had confirmation that Pattaya is business as usual as for Koh Samui and the other islands and resorts on eastern side of the southern peninsular I have heard no news but suspect there is very little damage if any.

As for refunds first check with your insurance company, if your insurance company dose not cover you then if used a credit card see if they will make a refund, you may be out of pocket but you are in a better situation than if the earthquake/tsunami were to have happened next week.

Hugh,

If this is as bad as it seems, drinking water and sanitation are going to become major issues. And the infrastructure doesn't need to cope with you right now. If you've ever considered exploring the North or North-East, this would be the time.

Hotels are going to be a double-whammy. Not only are they well-booked for holiday travel, but this is going to consume most of the spare rooms. Your window of opportunity to re-book in Bangkok may have already closed.

The hotel and resorts assocation are asking tourists not to come. You know it is bad when they turn away business.

They are claiming they are simply unable to provide services and amenities. In addition, the infrastructure (particularly in Patong) is a total mess. Strucuturally, many resorts are damaged.

I would suggest changing your plans. For the sake of a few $$, you could be enjoying a far better holiday somewhere else like Samui or PAttaya.
