I'm sitting at home watching the tragic events from Asia and now Africa too and thinking about my own situation. I have a trip booked and I should be in Thailand in Three weeks time. Is it safe to travel now, because of aftershocks, lack of infastructure or deiseases that will spread after flooding? I'm worried about it, but at the same time I know that the last thing Thailand and the other affected countries need is tourists to stop coming. The economic damage is just about to start. What are other people doing? I never let terrorist attacks or threats affect my plans because then 'they win', but is Thailand in a condition to receive visitors?

prsit: It is business as usual in Pattaya but DO NOT plan to go to Phuket or probably anywhere on the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand. I am sure BKK suffered no ill affects. Come ahead but use some common sense about where you are planning to go.

Being a member on this forum, I would doubt that Phuket or Phi Phi island would be high on your "agenda" on must see/do. How exactly does the recent events affect the rest of LOS???? If you were going to these places, go somewhere else......LOS has many many different places to go. Of course, this statement: "but is Thailand in a condition to receive visitors?" has to be a joke right....???

I will have to change my plans altogether. I have Eleven days to travel from Bangkok to Singapore by train/bus and much of my time was going to be spent in the South of Thailand. Anyway, mine is a small problem. It doesn't really matter. Let's just pray for the people affected by all of this.

Phuket has power, water, and phone/internet service currently. Some bars are open tonight. Phuket needs your money to operate and keep going. Thais have a wonderful way of bouncing back. Maybe not the best place to be today, but things are going to keep moving here. Please do not cancel your trips to Thailand or even Phuket if possible.

I would think that it's pretty obvious Thailand as a whole is still open for business and ready for tourists. Phuket and a few other tourist areas will slowly be getting things under control over the next several days. However, you're talking about a trip that doesn't start for weeks yet. Who knows, maybe Phuket will be willing and able to accept tourists again by then. On the other hand, maybe there will be some massive uprising right after you arrive. If nothing else, we have learned yet again that life can be surprisingly unpredictable. As for folks who are traveling to Phuket this week, well I hope you're bringing a shovel with you. What Phuket needs right now is help, not a bunch of lazy blue-balls and honeymooners.

Tourists told to drop trips to affected beach sites Published on December 28, 2004 The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has advised incoming tourists with hotel reservations in tsunami-hit destinations to cancel their trips. The message was aimed at visitors from Scandinavia, South Korea and Russia in particular, because they usually fly directly to Phuket and reserve hotels by the beach. “The situation is chaotic as tourists with advance bookings for the disaster-hit destinations cannot get into the country,” said Pornsiri Manoharn, TAT deputy governor for international markets, adding that the notification would be in effect for two weeks to one month. To assist tourists, the TAT and the Thai Hotels Association have prepared more than 1,200 rooms in Bangkok and Pattaya to accommodate foreign tourists who were injured or left without lodgings because of the damage to hotels by the series of tidal waves that hit the southern provinces on Sunday morning. Thai Airways International, Nok Air, Orient Thai and Phuket Air will provide special flights to transport the tourists from Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai to Bangkok. “All expenses involved will be shouldered by the [tourism] ministry,” Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop said after consulting Tourism Minister Sontaya Kunplome and TAT Governor Juthamas Siriwan yesterday. The Phuket Police Station is now serving as a tourism command centre. Tourists can also contact special counters located at the airports in Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Ranong and Hat Yai. Suwat, Sonthaya and Juthamas flew to Phuket yesterday. They declined to disclose any estimates of the cost of the damage. Prakit Chinamourphong, vice president of the Thai Hotels Association, said the association would prepare about 1,000 rooms for those tourists evacuated from the many islands in the South. Some hotels in Bangkok such as SC Park have allocated 40 free rooms for stranded overseas tourists. Rama Garden is offering 75 per cent discounts off its normal rates through until Thursday. The rate includes breakfast. Prakit said that at least 1,000 rooms were needed for tourists at the moment. Suchat Sritama The Nation
