I had a chat yesterday with some people about early retirement and living abroad.
It transpires that now if you have been away from the UK for a year you may lose your NHS entitlements.
It doesn't matter if you have paid in for 20,30 or 40 years when you return after a year you can no longer use the National Health Service for free?
Apparently you have to return within a year for a certain amount of time. How long I don't know?
The law has been changed on this recently apparently?
This obviously effects pensioners 50+ and others who have moved to places like Spain,Portugal & Thailand.
Ronnie Biggs returned from Brazil with a heart problem (stroke) and received NHS treatment and detention at Her Majesty's pleasure.
Does anybody have any accurate facts on this situation?
In general older people tend to need health care more often?

I don't understand. I thought aliens have much better health care than is available elsewhere, and it seems to cure people instantaneously. At least it seems that way on all the movies I have seen. An with your "connections"...

The case someone was putting forward was the 'brain drain' = so many people want to leave the UK and live abroad they wanted to slow the exodus. Seems pretty mean to me that you pay National Insurance all your working life than have it rescinded because some government oik doesn't like the fact you want to spend more than a year abroad.
The joke about asylum seeking, free housing and a giro cheque would be funny if it weren't true !
There seems to be positive discrimination against indigenous Brits !
Get yourself down the Khao San Road, buy a passport with a suitable foreign name and become an asylum seeker ! The rules are then in your favour !
This has of course a lot of implications for UK citizens wishing to settle in LOS?

This is normal practice in most other european
countries,you get punished for leaving the place.
Its the same with pension
you have to have lived from
15 years of age to get a full pension at 65
I dont understand why would you go back.
thailand has excellent medical services and health
insurance is possible. Just find a thai girl who knows
the system and is not trying to poisen you and your ok
Sorry I find the asylum thing funny cause I don;t pay
tax there anymore, my ole man goes on about it every
time I speak to him. If you wanna live in los do it.

In the USA it's a little different. Medicare which kicks in when your 62 or older is only good for care in the US. No time restrictions on overseas stay.
Medicare is part of our social security retirement system.
