A while a go I read a book called from the Land of green Ghosts, which is a true story about a man fighting for the rebels against the government in Burma and after a chance meeting with a Cambridge don escaping Burma through Thailand and then travelling on to study for a degree in English Literature at Cambridge University. Anyway a thread a couple of days ago about Burma reminded me of a passage in the book which I thought was very entertaining in ta chapter that followed the weeks he spent in Bangkok before flying to the UK in 1990. The time was spent at the British embassy and in the company of the British ambassador no less. The passage was about his experience taking a drive with the ambassador. Anyway it goes like this “In the weeks that followed I lived alone with the ambassador and his staff. On Sundays when his chauffeur had the day off, Mr K (the British Ambassador) would drive me to mass himself. Often he would take us on a tour of Bangkok. He had a low opinion of Thai drivers, especially of their ability to park. He would roll down his window and call out to them: “Bloody Thais! Has noone ever given you driving lessons?” I would shrink into my seat waiting for a confrontation, but the Thais noticing the ambassadorial standard fluttering on the cars bonnet, would draw back and slink away. I had never come across such unihhibited behaviour before in a high official and gradually realised that Mr K did not regard himself as (to use a term Burmese officials apply to themselves) “Heaven born”” So did anyone see or hear of him doing this?, does the present ambassador do it?, and has anyone ever tried it without an ambassadors car?
