I was leaving my office on Rama IV the other day and a farang guy approached me. He was around 55-60, dishevelled, dirty blue denim shirt etc. He handed me some promo flyer from a plastic carrier bag and when I took it, asked for a few baht because he 'was thirsty'. I gave him 50baht and he called me (quote) a tight bastard. What was he expecting? 1000? Has anyone else seen this guy in the Silom / Sathorn area? Does anyone know his story? How the hell does a farang fall so far as to cadging a few baht on the streets of Bangkok? Can he really be stuck here? Don't the embassies arrange to repatriate people in dire straits?

Damn...Expatchuck...you won the bet!! Damn Damn Damn I thought the only way to get a drink out of Scobie was to stick ya fingers down his throat. Seriously Scobie, have not seen your man but have seen a couple of "almost as bads". You are correct about the embassies of most countries but you have to go to them and ask (beg) for that assistance.

Some of my observations: * Pattaya bus terminal (Dec 2004) : A guy in his 40's (claimed to be from Ireland) had a sad story about not having money because his Thai wife was delayed from BKK and he was waiting for her to arrive at the bus terminal. When I returned to Pattaya 1 week later he was still waiting for his wife to show up there ! * Bangkok Nana Parking lot (May 2005) : A tall guy in his 20's (said he was German) approched me at 2h30AM and asked me for some money. He said a TG stole his money, he was very persistent and at the end I walked away ! * Bangkok BTS Victory Monument (May 2005) : Not really begging but a farang man (about 45-50 yrs old) was playing a guitar on the sidewalk and had his guitarcase opened in front of him to receive donations ! Hmm, are these new franchises of the Cambodian beggars mafia ?

Jeez.. never realised it was so prevalent here. I can understand a guy losing his wallet and needing 100 baht to get home, but it seems there is a number of long-term farang beggars here. How sad is that? Much as I love Thailand, I wouldn't want to live here with no money. I'm guessing some of them will be ex-Bangkok Hilton tenants.

The ungrateful bastard! I'd have told him that if he wasn't happy with it, then to give it back. I'm amazed that these "aggressive" beggars are over there too. What's really good is when they say they're thirsty, you pop into a nearby kiosk and buy them a can of soft drink, or if they're hungry, buy them some food from a street cart. Beggars of that ilk over here in blighty are a pretty uniform bunch. They nearly always seem to be able to support a scraggy dog, often have a fag dangling from their mouth (cigarette to you Americans) and a can of strong lager next to them too. Nearly always, they're fit looking guys and the solution to their problems is simple. Get a bloody job, you lazy sod!

WTF - You are giving him money and he calls you a tight bastard? If you gave him 1 bt, he is better off than if he hadn't received anything. This is like the time that I was going home from Soi Cowboy and a bunch of window washing kids were hanging out on the curb outside of the Subway station. One of them made eye contact with me and asked me for money. I asked him why I should just give him money, I told him that I work for my money and he should do the same. I then grabbed him by the arm and took him to the large glass window of the Subway station and told him to clean it. He took his squeegee and cleaned a portion of the window to which afterwards I gave him some money. The girl I was with was laughing hysterically the whole time and harrassed him the whole time (afterall she is working for her money too). When the kid returned to his group of friends they all applauded and proceeded to chide him to no end.

I guess he figured that as a fellow farang I have some sort of moral responsibility to help him. Stuff that. As a farang he has numerous opportunities to either earn a living here in Thailand (even as a teacher) or go home and get the dole. 50 million Thais should be so lucky.

What a cheeky c***. You should have offered the motocycle taxi boys the 1,000 baht to give him a good kicking......
