17/18 hours on a plane - and Thai is in the United alliance- so I cant use my zillion miles on Continental/NW/KLM to upgrade- that leaves choice of coach or $6500 for business (yeah right) - can one do that in coach and survive?? both NW and THAI leave new york at same time- around noon- my upgrade on NW gets me in at midnight- no time for 1am closing play- sure would be nice to get in at 4pm on THAI???? or would they have to carry me off in a funny suit- and then id miss the bars completely-

The flight wasn't nearly as tedious as I feared it would be. I slept away about about 8 hours of it on the way out, 10 on the way back, but in increments of 2 to 3 hours. It was read for awhile, walk around the cabin a bit, doze off, eat, walk around, watch the inflight entertainment system for an hour or two, sleep again, read, sleep, etc. Of course, neither flight was very full in May, so that gave me a empty seat next to me (I could have had a whole row on the outbound leg), which made it easier to sleep. In all, I thought it definitely preferable to the 24-hour trip needed to reach BKK on Northwest. I can't see that sitting at Narita for a few hours waiting for the connecting flight to Don Muang as very much more entertaining than sitting on a nonstop flight. But those extra hours in BKK that evening (I was checked into my hotel by 5.30 p.m.) were highly diverting. I don't know what kind of frequent flyer status you have on NW. If you can use WorldPerks miles to upgrade to business class from any published fare, then it's certainly worth considering to go that way. However, if you can only upgrade from a M fare, then you're better off getting the cheapest Thai fare from JFK (about $900) and save your WorldPerks miles for something else, likea hotel room.. Of course, if you have enough FF miles for a totally free ticket to BKK, it's a no-brainer - take it.

I've been told that the cheapest fares on Thai are not eligible for frequent flyer miles. I hope I'm wrong.

You are not wrong. As of June 1, the cheapest Thai flights don't earn FF points. However, the cheapest flights on Thai from NYC are about $200-$300 cheaper than their competitors, at least for now, so you don't really lose anything by not getting FF points. And you gain an extra evening in BKK.which is worth something.

Evil Congratulations, that sure is a long flight. Did you notice which route the aircraft took, did it have Skymap? Normally the London - BKK flights go over Prague, Black sea, Kabul, Delhi, Calcutta and Yangon (Rangoon). Once you arrive after that long flight go to Subway massage and have Rin (23) loosen you up a bit.

Some things: Citibank has a credit card now that allows you to earn one mileage point for every mile flown. You can redeem for rewards such as airline tickets on ANY airline around the world with no blackout dates, giftcards at leading retailers in the U.S. and online. There is a $75 annual fee. Here's why I like this card. I buy a ticket on Delta for $1000 I get 1000 points on the card. I take my trip to Thailand and I get 18,792 frequent flier points on Delta and 18,792 mileage points on the Citibank Premier Pass Elite level card. Now, since I've taken this trip 3 times this year I will be in Delta's Gold Medallion level and get double the frequent flier points or about 38,000 frequent flier points and 18,792 points on the card. The first time you use the card you get 15,000 points which is a $150 Best Buy gift card. Worth a look! http://www.citibank.com and look for reward cards. Sorry, just trying to offer some alternatives to Thai Air for best value. LS

Gus- Yes, it had SkyMap. Over the Atlantic to Scandinavia, Finland, Baltic countries, Russia and then I'm a bit unsure (fell asleep), but picked up Pakistan, India, etc and rest of London-BKK route at some point. Thanks for the tip on Subway massage, but I'm pretty much an Eden loyalist these days.

I am sure. I had the original citibank premier pass card which carried no annual fee and you got points for purchases and 1 point for every 3 miles flown. With the new Citibank Premier Pass elite level card you pay a $75 annual fee but get 1 point for every mile flown. When you buy the ticket you will see the flight miles show up about 2 months after the flight. You also get 2 points for grocery store purchases and gas purchases. This is a GREAT card. One note: Save your boarding passes because some of the intl airlines don't get the mileage information to the credit card. I flew on 4 flights on Bangkok Air and the miles have not shown up. They asked for the boarding passes which I tossed. Domestic U.S. carriers are pretty good about the info. Heres the direct link to the card and details about the program. Yes, after your first purchase you get 15k points. Remember you get your frequent flier miles on your airline program AND 1 point for every mile flown on your card which can be redeemed for airline flights, gift cards, hotel stays....etc. LS http://www.citibank.com/us/cards/cardserv/premierpass/elite/index.jsp
