Has anybody been to the ceremony where a Thai becomes a Monk?
I just sponsored my wife's son to do it. A huge affair and many things at play, just wondering how many other guys (farangs as witnesess/sponsors) have been through it.

Been at several, usual quite a good occassion, I prefer it after sundown when the beer starts to flow. Amazing the amount of money that gets put into the occassion. Of course it often depends on the reason for the joining of the monkhood.

I went to one many years ago for the brother of a BG I was seeing at the time. Ahead of the event, I was nervous about what I perceived would be the solemness of the occasion. I didn't realize it was mostly - but certainly not entirely - a big party. And, of course, I was encouraged to make a donation towards the festivities. All in all, it was a very good experience, one that I'm glad I saw first-hand.

I was thinking to take 3 months off to become a monk and see what changes it makes to my life.
But I do not think I could do it alone, anybody out there would like to join me for 3 months?
I would need someone to chat with, someone to sneak off to the local karaoke and brothels after hours and sit till 3am chatting, I mean chanting and drinking beer with.
Seriously, could be fun and enlightening, anyone?

had a long talk with somebody who was a monk for 9 months.
he was weird at times.
oh, after chang number 8 or so, he confessed there was sex in the temple.
also I know now that monks wear no underwear, not sure about the nuns though.

The first full moon in July is the main induction time of yearly novice monks.
I went to a ceremony and saw many young novices sign on.
It's a special time.
Most Thai boys will do monk for a few weeks.
The king himself once signed on.
There are also farang monks.
I have met several
If your super keen on staying in Thailand that's one hell of a way to do it.
But basically hang out at the temple long enough and get a letter from the local abbott and then the paper work and there usually will give you a multi visa special.....so long as you remain a monk.
This western dude had been a monk 4 years.
He was very healthy and clear eyed and calm...he mighta been for real.
I think pussy hunters might not get around this loop hole.
Besides unless the temple was in Pattaya the lurks might be absent.
They eat once a day...
And spend a lot of time praying and fixing shit in the temple grounds.
But if your into blessing young woman this jobs for you.

A few weeks....lolol, the initial time is 3 months, and all Thai men are expected to partake, then you are recognized as a novice monk. If a Thai man was to not become a monk for at least the 3 months then shame to the family would be horrendous.
My girlfriend's father just came up from the South last weekend to sponsor his sister's son. It was a huge affair with plenty of food, singing dancing, and card playing. The formality of shaving his head was the most traditional of the get together, with 9 monks in attendance.
It is as simple of a life as you could imagine. As long as you stay in robes you can get a religious studies visa.
There is a pretty famous temple out of Ubon with a foreign abbot.
