Walking along Sukhumvit you can't help but notice that many of the vendors communicate with each other using sign language. Does anyone know if this is just a convenience to deal with traffic noise or are there many deaf people amongst the vendors, perhaps due to disease like rubella...?

There is a very active association of deaf-mutes in Thailand, for the express purpose of helping them to earn a living. A large percentage of them are retail street merchants. I have wondered if there is a higher percentage of deaf-mutes there than in other countries, or whether they are just more conspicuous. Perhaps someone here knows. I bargain with all the street vendors for the challenge, and after agreeing on a price wind up giving them the original asking price if it is a bargain - plus a little more if they are handicapped. But then I come from a country where the handicapped now expect the tax payers to work for them. Treat them well.

look in Mc D around midnight they are all there. I guess they give them some cheap space so they can sell and make a living.

Answer from my Thai wife, we now live in the UK. She was raised in BKK and never saw a great deal of deaf dumb market traders until I,took her to Sukhumvit Soi 4 (ish area). She says it is not the norm but seems to be a place where they gather and trade. I knew one or two mutes when I lived in BKK and they are a very friendly group. Signing is easier to learn than Thai (and I do speak Thai, well I try). My wife does not believe it is a desease problem but more genitic.
