The OZ government seems to be pulling a CYA job in its current travel warning to travelers to LOS:

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/TRAVEL/06/29/bt.australia.thai.warning.ap/index.html

They are not just talking about the South but are also cautioning travellers to BKK.

However, as far as I can tell only OZ is including BKK in their warnings...

From the posting....

"The government did not detail any intelligence it had received to prompt the new warning."

Not very informative relative to sources. Conjecture?

Which could explain the lack of similar warnings from other countries. Unless they are being posted also as we speak.

I suspect after Bali, The Aussie government will pre-empt any blame by issuing even the slightest of threats to its citizens.

Excess care also causes harm by fear mongering.

Spot on richie. That' exactly what happens. The aussie government is paranoid that it was perceived to have been less than on the ball over Bali, and now it posts farcical travel warnings to just about every damn country in the world, just to be safe.

There aren't many places it is safe to go, accoding to DFAT. It's a joke.

I think the only safe country to visit - according to them - is Australia which is ironic given that of all the countries I regularly visit in Asia it has the lowest level of security at places like CBD buildings, hotels and landmarks, yet is perceived by Al Queda as one of its key targets.

The sensational abbreviation of the message in the Australian Travel Advisory (reissued: 29 June, 2005) is to blame for this - go directly to the source, NEVER trust media.

Checking the Aus. Foreign Office site, the advisory is cautionary against travel to the Southern Provinces. Bangkok is only mentioned insofar as security at the Aus. Embassy 'remains at a high level as a precautionary measure'.

Bangkok is a major tourist centre and therefore will always present itself as a terrorist target.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have four categories of countries with advice against travel (2 no travel and two essential travel only) :

Advise against all travel to the whole country (e.g. Somalia, Ivory Coast)

Advise against all travel to parts of the country (many countries including Iraq and even India (presumably Tamil-run areas), but not Thailand)

Advise against all but essential travel to the whole country (e.g. Central African Republic, Haiti, Liberia, Togo)

Advise against all but essential travel to parts of the country (e.g. includes Thailand)

The main Thailand entry speaks of widespread risk of terrorism, especially in the Southern Provinces (national terrorism), and of past targetting of tourist sites in neighbouring Indonesia (international/national terrorism). Bangkok is only mentioned as being a tourist area with increased security in place.

Note there are no countries where the UK government, and presumably Aus. and other leading commonwealths, forbids it's citizens to travel. Next time an American is boasting about his liberties, invite him to come on holiday with you to Cuba and watch him squirm

Don't take the media's word for ANYTHING. Check the OFFICIAL websites, make your informed decision, take out MAJOR travel insurance, check with your doctor for vaccinations and health advice and then go and enjoy.

(Oh, and get a full STD check on your return and an HIV test after three months)
