I have not had the chance to travel in the Middle East yet, so I am looking forward to calling into the Grace Hotel area to hopefully try some food from Arabic Countries and meeting some different people. I just thought I'd better ask if there has been any problem there between British/American brothers and our brothers from Arab or Islamic Nations.
I'm keen to meet people there, but don't think it's worth spoiling my trip if there will be trouble.
I have never been to Grace, so don't know what kind of atmosphere surrounds the place.

I can't speak for the situation in BKK but I can add a couple of general observations.
I am a Brit and spend most of my time working in Islamic countries. I am based in Dubai but get around most of the region.
Generally the people are hospitable, certain subjects are of course best avoided but the large majority of people are still very friendly. Seldom do I encounter overt hostility, but it is not unknown.
Now the guys you see in Bahrain or Dubai drinking and chasing women are not typical. One may initially think you would have more in common with them but often they are the most difficult to relate to. I would assume that this was the case in BKK. Seeking them out would not give you a real insight into the culture of the Middle East.

There are several places where you can get good Middle Eastern food in BKK, but forget the Grace Hotel. I don't think the London terrorist attacks have exacerbated the situation, Western farangs couldn't be any less welcome than they already were. Since the Thai police cracked down on dope dealing there, the male clientele has gone from 95% Arab to virtually 100% Arab.
Actually, if we leave the specifics aside, the situation at the Grace isn't much different than in dozens of bars/clubs in every city in the world. We all recognize that some establishments cater to a defined group of people - whether it be on the basis of ethnicity, cultural affiliation, life style, gender preference or special interest - and outsiders aren't welcome. Just like it isn't wise for tourists in the U.S. to seek out outlaw biker bars or even walk in certain neighborhoods, it's not a good idea for you to visit the Grace.
You have more chance of encountering a polar bear at the Grace than a "brother" who's interested in chatting with you. They (the Arabs, not the polar bears) resent your intrusion into their reserve. Nothing good can come from it and many very bad things can happen.
With hundreds of other alternatives that do cater to an international crowd and where you'll be very welcome, skip the Grace. You won't be missing anything pleasant.

There haven't been many incidents other than that one little bomb that went off near the Grace several years ago that just killed a few bar girls. Does the fire at the Grace Hotel count as a terrorist incident since an Islamic type turned over his hubbly-bubbly and set the top of the hotel on fire? Lots of bar girls were killed in this one.
Prsit, don't waste your time. Broaden your horizons somewhere else.

I could add other 2 stories i' ve heard:
Told by a Nana disco girl the first, is that a black guy grabbed the girl of a western guy who just passed by the street and threatened to kill her with a knife pointed at her throat like an hostage,then for some reasons the black slashed her troath,then the other guy throwed money all around crying in rage and the police arrested the killer, most likely a urban myth, or not?
i passed by several times not alone after the sunset in the parking lot on the way back to the room and I always made it out,phew.
The other I recall that I readed it on The Nation,a british forget (or got stoled by the cabbie with the help of a stick ) his case with some thousands pounds in a taxi he just took from the airport,directed to the Grace hotel of course...also here the cops found the runaway driver.
when I walk back alone I always speed up all the way to the other side of that damned soi 3.
On the way out from soi 1 to Gullivers for example,i almost always took motorbiketaxi,but also that is not the best option as he cut in the nasty side soi's who are really crowded by rats,roaches and...narghile's.
If I had to walk I always cross the road after Bamboo.
In 4 years I pass by,the place looks horrid as ever,even in the early morning,stay away!
Dont wanna sound stupid but,what if we took the MRT to Sutthisan and a group of Ali Baba jump on at Petchaburi?there's any anti-terror check at the subway gates like it's happening here or...?

Between all of us, we could probably collect enough Grace-based atrocity stories to publish a very scary book, maybe call it "Whorers from Grace, an Anthology of Pros."
Would probably become a best-seller in English and Arabic.
