Don't know how many of you have seen 'City Of Ghosts" with James Caan and Matt Dillion. I saw it when it was relatively new and I was sorta out of it when I watched it. Have seen it recently and love it. It's about an insurance scammer who hooks up with partners in Cambodia and they get back more than they bargain for. There is something about this film that draws you in. By the way the film makes a brief stop in Bangkok and CM I believe...as if I needed to justify the posts inclusion into BTF.

Oh and I have used the search function to see if any one else has posted info on this flick....all I can find was it was mentioned with a stack of other movies with scenes shot in LOS.

If anyone else has seen it what did you think?

I thought it was pretty good. I'll be off to Cambodia in a few months so it was good to see parts of Cambodia in the movie.

One question I have about the movie is the authenicity of it. Everything in the movie looked very "Thai" to me... the language, the "wai"ing, the dancing, everything.... even though all these scenes of the movie where supposed to be in Cambodia.

I know for a fact that the language of the background music and songs is Isan (Laos). My wife understood every word. Perhaps Cambodia and Laos have the same language. I'm no expert on SE Asian languages so I'm not sure.

Definitely a movie worth watching.

definitely not, but a Thai/Lao who lives near the Khmer border would know the lingo

I do however think that the performances were done in Thailand

film companies don't like to spend to much time in Laos, Vietnam, or Cambodia and often film extended scenes in Thailand, and take only basic shots in Cambodia

but, they did spend a fair bit of time in Cambodia, judging by the filming locations,,,

Definitely a movie worth watching

agreed

then I have news for you, your wife is ethnic Khmer. either that or she has had significant interaction with khmers where she grew up in Isan and speaks it quite well. all songs on that soundtrack that aren't french are khmer, and most are khmer pop hits from the late 60s and early 70s, from cambodia. there isn't any lao in that movie.

the vast majority of what was supposed to be cambodia in that movie was definitely filmed in cambodia, and many of the actors playing khmers--though not all--were Khmer.

Interesting movie, thanks for the recommendation. I've seen that bartender in other movies. He really went to shit didn't he. Maybe he just let himself go for the part. I didn't understand what the ringing bell was all about in the MP.

any others???

She's from Isan, not Cambodia. Maybe she did have Khymer friends growing up, I don't know. She definitely understood those songs though.

I think your girl must have spent a lot of time at the border. Some scenes are shot in Thailand but mostly in Cambodia. In fact the New York Police station scenes are actually shot in Bangkok. If you choose the extra features section of the DVD they explain it all in detail for you. It is really worth listening too because the movie is just so good.

It always makes me misty eyed when they are flying into BKK. I really love that city...It is the only city where I have ever truly felt I was home when I arrive in the airport.

One of the reasons that you may be confused is that the Ex-General Sedeth is actually a Thai director playing the role of an ex-general. Also the music is totally Khmer, French or oldies American. There is a little house music and a couple of other instrumental mood tracks used in the film, such as in the scene when Jimmy goes out the back door in New York on his way to BKK.

I love this film it is a real art film in my book. I was in Phnom Penh a year ago last June and it is exactly like the movie. The difference is that things a are little more sedate than they were in the early and mid nineties. I didn't see any violence while I was there. It was very safe but you have to get used to the feel of the place. When you first get there you can easily get freaked because of the state of things. Loknar (another BKK tonight regular) and myself flew in on Bangkok Air at 10:30 Pm without a hotel. We ended up that night down at the river in a neat place and finished off with a beer at the Foreign Correspondent’s Club. We hired a driver and had a great time. BTW the people at the airport selling hotel rooms won't screw you and it turns out to be a good deal unlike some other places in Asia.

All in all our time in Cambodia was wonderful. The people are so incredibly sweet I am unable to convey it in writing. To witness what they suffered makes it all the harder once you meet them.

I would recommend you hiring a driver in the capital and a driver and a guide in Siem Reap if you get up that way to Angkor. This is cheap to day about $25 & $20 per day respectively or there abouts. It is worth it. Package tours aren't my thing and Angkor is spectacular and the Wats cover a vast area. The Lonely Planet Cambodia is good but the Hotels section is lame in that what it calls mid-range we I think would call budget in LOS. Anyway it is still good and the people are fantastic. Get there soon because the world is coming to Cambodia...
