Rick- There's a thread entitled "Shopping, " another called "Tech," and your question would have better placed in either of them.
However, it's a quick answer. Yes, multi-system players are widely available. In fact, it's cheaper for you to buy such a player before you get to LOS and bring it with you (especially if you are moving from the U.S). All such players can be switched between 120/220/240v as well as between PAL and NTSC.

Rick435,
Your American player when switched to 240Volts should have worked fine in LOS, I can only assume you either failed to correct the voltage adjustment ( switch at the back of the player near where in power cord plugs in ) OR you did not correctly tune the TV to recieve the signal from the player.
If you cover travelling costs ( Aus to LOS about $US 600 I will fix for free), LOL

Ricky:

Buy your VCR after you arrive and you will get a multi-system that is voltage automatic. You won't have to worry about it.

The big thing is you will also need a multi-system TV in order to see the picture.

Both your TV and your VCR must be multi-system in order to be compatible.

(argh.... )

Multi-system is *not* multi-system... What you are looking for is a VCR (or DVD player) that is also capable of accomodating multi-system *output* - a system also known as a 'converter'.

Most so-called multi-system devices will play different regions and systems, but will only be able to play back on one type of TV -- unless you use component output (Red/Green/Blue) in which case it does not matter.

When shopping around for VCR (or DVD player), make sure to specify that you are looking for a system which is a converter, not just multi-region. Converters will either automatically adapt to the TV system, or will have a switch (either physical, or done via the remote setup) that allows you to select the system of the playback display device.

There are various superstores, or online sources in the US that can accomodate what you are looking for - when purchased in the US, at a local nationwide chain, you may be able to get a much better price, than if you were to purchase the device in LOS...

...or, as EPC points out, just use this as an excuse to pick up a multi-system TV or projector, and you will also gain compatibility by doing so.

Rick435 sez: "I have had the best technicians. in the city....tell me just to buy the vcr over there"

Well, not sure what city you live in, but your 'best technicians' pretty much suck if they did not know the above technical details, which should be elementary to any technician that claims to be 'best' at anything..

Mel Gibson sez: (a bunch of crap removed)

*PLEASE* know hat you are talking about, or just don't start typing -- none of what you 'suggested' was even remotely related (or could have been) to Rick's issue.

Rick435 - you can also find mail-order resources via Google.com or Froogle.com, using the search terms: multisystem converter VCR (or, DVD, if you look for that).

Hope this helps you, Rick! Good luck.

Duck as usual you are full of Kee Phet.

expatchuck has the story correct but perhaps the "wording" a little astray.

Firstly IGNORE that annoying stupid little duck who has very little idea how to fly, let alone know anything technical except to use stupid confusing terminology.
Although I have promised to buy him some beers when in LOS.

OK down to the point,,
1) You need a VCR that "outputs" BOTH NTSC and PAL.

2) You need it switched to PAL ( yes the Thais where smart enough to stay away from NTSC ).

If the VCR or infact DVD is OUTPUTING PAL then it WILL be seen on the THAI TV set ( The Thailand TV is PAL ) if tuned to the correct channel of reception.

Note: If you are unable to get a VCR that "outputs" PAL with an NTSC tape ( an inbuilt converter) then you need a TV that accepts both PAL and NTSC. SO when playing NTSC tapes you switch the TV and VCR to NTSC signal, when you want to play PAL tapes switch to PAL.

If you want to pluck a duck ask daffy who will strt with jargon like, start with the fourth metacarple and.......

O.K. //// I am 70 yrs old,,, so I am not the sharpest tool in the woodshed anymore....You guys explained everything fine.....The only thing I do not understand is after I pick up the proper player......with a converter that plays Pal and NTSC....
Do I still have to convert my dvd disk from NTSC to Pal...Or can I leave them in NTSC format...And still play them over there...
Rick..
