Warning to newbees. At Xmas and New Years, many hotels have compulsory dinners which u most pay for even if u do not eat or do not want. And if u have booked a doubble u must pay for 2 dinners even if you do not have a special friend with u at that time, Some of the cheaper dinners run about 1900 bt x2 = 3800bt. If you are there Xams and New Years it could run you about 8000 bt.Enjoy yor meal.I always stay at hotels that do not have this system but check before u book, unless u are Japanese and do not care about how u spend your money.

Jep it was my first years in Phuket IF I wanted to stay in the hotel 4000 THB extra for dinner new year and CM YIMPEE well we went and eat anyway but it was not worth 4000 thb. I doubt that the smaller hotel has any of this kind of thing. It is mostley the bigger once that has it.

I have decided to be japanese for a day so have already booked a hotel in Pattaya for New year that's using this system (Royal Twins Palace), for me and the wife. The deal is 1500 baht each if we attend the dinner, or an 800 baht room surcharge if we do not attend.

I presume these Gala dinners has some entertainment on as well, can't decide wether to stump up the extra 2200 baht and attend the dinner, or just forfiet 800 baht and go out on the town. Haven't spent New Year in LOS before so where's the best entertainment likely to be - inside or outside of the hotel?

I should add that we will be in Pattaya for a week, so will have plenty of time to take in the regular day to day 'entertainment', and as the wife is a former working TG she is openminded enough to not worry where we spend the other nights - but wanted to make New Years a bit special rather than just sit in a regular go-go...advice please

Xmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the busiest times of the year for Hotels in Thailand, also all the staff expect bonuses and want the time off as well, so hoteliers have to keep the staff happy.

Hoteliers are not the only people to profiteer at this time of year, airlines, bars, restaurants, MP’s, Girls, just about everybody is on the make for an inferior service.

If you have to come to Thailand at this time I would be more worried about actually booking a hotel as many will already be fully booked for the festive season, by December all decent and half decent hotels will be fully booked.

My advice is if you are worried about the cost then think of coming at another time of the year like November, February, March or April.

A compulsory gala dinner on certain holidays is a fairly standard rule at many hotels all over the world, not just in Thailand. Since most hotels are booked solid on New Year's Eve and have waiting lists in many cases, they can add extra conditions. It's the law of supply and demand. Prices go up anytime demand for a commodity or service outsrtips supply. Look at it this way - there are compulsory dinners only a fews a year, but rooms are "on sale" four to six months out of the year.

Still think its a bit harsh being charged by most Hotels for a christian celebration in a buddist country ! Best bet is to find a P4P who has a sponser, [ who pays for her upmarket apartment ] and speand a couple of days with her and give her the 2000bt whatever extra !

Problem with that is the hotels that specify a "Gala Dinner" also specify minimum stay over the same period.
So we're all shat on all over.

Me I stay where there is no "gala Dinner" unless I cook it myself.

I was in Chiang Mai Sheraton last Christmas with my wife. It was just after the "meet the parents" component of that particular sojourn. Anyway they had a "compulsary" dinner dealio too. However you could opt out. I went ahead and went just for fun for the brunch aspect. It was okay but the convenience made it the thing to do that day.

I was bushed after being upcountry in the village and wanted a little luxury after sleeping with the chickens for a week. I think it was something like 1800-2000THB or something each.

At the end of the day I could have stayed at the Ping on the river and they would have only nailed me for 200bht or there abouts but the bed was saggy. I knew they were going to bend me over when I went to the Sheraton but I went in with my eyes open. I did notice that there were an awful lot of dinners being sold through the "no choice" option, however they were very easily avoided and very well posted. I think you'd have to be a drooling idiot to miss their big signs. That was strange too, it seemed almost as if they were expecting people to kick the doors down to pay $50-$100 USD to eat a hotel dinner in Thailand as if that was a good buy or there were some type of global shortage of over priced hotel food.
