I bought my red in a Restaurant in Pattaya and the prices were pretty excessive. Any help lads on where to get reasonable reds at reasonable prices in Thailand. It might even be worth my while getting the wine at the airport on my next trip, although there are usually restrictions on how much you can bring out. Incidentally, I am looking at 6 month stays in Thailand so the supply is an important issue for me.

Two Villa supermarkets in Sukhumvit have a huge range of wines and are about the cheapest you will find in Bangkok. I have noticed several fine Australian wines on the shelves also.

The villa near Soi33 has an upstairs wine section and the Villa in Ploenchit cneter has a large range also.

submale,, You are unlikely to get any fine Aus wine at a reasonable price,, in fact get any wine at a reasonable price. This is due to the duties applied by the Thai government,, wine is seen as a LUXURY, and therefore gets a very large import tyax applied to it.
Wait a few more years for the "free trade deal" between Aus and Thailand to kick in and VABOOM suddenly reasonably priced wines will be available.
I am unsure over how many years the agreement lessens the tax,, but it can be found on the web.

Tks for the advice. Australia and Thailand have a free trade agreement so there should be no import taxes. What should happen and what does happen, though, are different stories.

I am not overly chauvanistic - if the Thais were to produce a good wine I would buy it. The one I tried on the Thai air flight was Thai and was ok.

I will definitely check out the addresses in humbug's post.

Many thanks again to both of you.

submale, YES Aus and Thailand have a "free trade deal" signed and complete,,,,,BUT this does not automatically release ALL products too a nil tax. It scales down over a period of several years on most products,,,,,example the Thai government could not allow cheaper Australian rice to kill off their rice farming.
Anyway the reducing scale is available on the net.

Cheers

I love red wine & share your sticker shock when checking prices in LOS. I spend 6 mnths ayr in LOS so I've had to find a wine merchant who did not markup too excessively. I settled on Wine Connection. There is a shop in Pattya (in collections of shops & restaurants between Beach Rd & Pty 2nd Rd approx Soi 10-12 & a couple in BKK (one in Suk Sq cnr Soi 3 & Suk Rd).

Selection is great & they sell by the glass to drink on premises. Hope this helps.
Cheers

If you happen to go to Laos for visa/border run, it is not so highly taxed there, - also Central dept store on the skytrain route, has a pretty good selection - doubt you will get a 'CLASSY' NZ Sav Blanc, but one never knows.

The free trade agreement will help lower prices, but may not be so good ofr improving the selection available. Thais have abysmal taste in wine (or else simply don't know what is available overseas), and most merchants tend to dump their crap here. Just look at all the overpriced 92 & 93 Bordeauxs for sale.
