I did a search and found nothing on this topic and figure this is the best place to launch a discussion.

Been married to a Thai gal for 30 years with one kid born in Thailand; two others born outside. None of them have ever lived in Thailand. Just a couple of short visits. They have my nationality. So the questions is about acquiring Thai nationality at this point (they are all in their 20s).

What is the law these days on whether they are eligible for Thai nationality? Wasn't possible 30 years ago. Does anyone know about this, has anyone been through it, or can anyone suggest some leads on where to go to find out?

Thanks all.

Daaders,

I have done a little research on this as I am in a similar position except children younger. I have yet to test this, but this is how I am led to believe it works.

You first need to apply for a Thai birth certificate for the children. This is best done at the Thai embassy in the country they were born.

Once they have a Thai birth certificate their mother (who I think would still need to be a Thai passport holder) then applies for a Thai passport for them in Thailand. They can have this Thai passport as well as their current (your country's) passport.

Like I said, I haven't tested this out but am about to, I'll let you know how I go.

Interesting. But complicated for me. Oldest one born in Thailand but no Thai birth certificate -- Consular Report of Live Birth Abroad only (but there must be a Thai birth certificate in an Amphur somewhere). Second one born in the USA. Third one born in KSA.

Looks like I will have my work cut out for me. Well, I'd appreciate hearing how it goes with you, if you don't mind: daaders@hotmail.com.

Anyone else out there in LOS got any insight? Thanks.

The Thai Embassy should be able to process the birth certificate and the passport at the same time. However for children over 16 it is not automatic. Only way to find out is check with the embassy in the country.

Of course that meane dealing with two different embassies as they will on issue the birth certificate in the country of birth.

daaders,

Complicated is an understatement. Having done it myself.

For your 2 children born overseas.

1.You must firstly get their Birth Certificates certified by the authority reponsibile. In the UK, did it at Interiior Ministry. Transfered into an A4 size.

2.Fill out the forms, pay some money copy of their passports.

3.The Thai Birth Certificates will be done first. You should be able to pick them up in 7 days etc.

4.Then passports will be made in Thailand for them. The embassy will take care of this for you. They will then be sent back to the embassy for collection at a later date.

Now the easy part. Once you have the passports, just get an arrival stamp in them. When they come over to Thailand, make sure they use their new Thai passports to get the stamp.

Go to the local Amphur and fill out a new form with a Thai address and they will get their Thai ID cards.

Cheers

Tim
