I have mongered all over the globe, but had never checked off the box named Bangkok.
I have finally corrected this deficiency.
I am curious how any rational human being could confuse the "act" from the truth?
My 1st observations...
1. Lordy, there are some sad examples of farangs walking about. Stumbling drunk at 4pm.
2. Bargirls are as described here (and elsewhere) ranging from mercenary to rather nice but all exactly conforming to the stereotype.
3. You can have a great time here for a very reasonable sum (including the crapulous $/Baht exchange rate at the present.)
4. Thailand is a really interesting place (including the BG subculture.)
But, where do these lovestruck types come from? (Don´t answer, the problem is psychological not geographic IMHO.)
I intend no disrespect towards lovestruck types in general, but at least to me (granted, I was educated about BKK by this and other forums) it is all very, very clear.
Am I the only one? Hardcore cynics need not respond.

I think the trend for Thai BG’s is to break the punters wallet, and then break his heart. As the ol’ saying goes:
A fool and his money are soon parted.
So it appears not only are they assholes, but fools as well.
Just as a working lady has to develop a kind of separation to do what she does continually. The punter needs to develop a similar separation of this world and the real world. Anyone that has lived in Thailand long enough knows this is not the real world. In the real world I am not a hansom man.
BTW, looks like you might have seen me out and about the other day around four. Sorry if I stepped on your toes.

first off, I am the polar opposite of a cynic!
However, the stumbling drunk at 4pm statement I must object to as my last trip 4pm was my afternoon nap time after being drunk by 1pm 
dude, seriously its whatever you make of it....I have traveled the world and find beauty in all nooks and cranny's but just leave the "love struck" types to their own...hell whatever makes them happy!!

I think anyone with a healthy IQ and a solid EQ can figure this one out for himself - but at least the lovestruck types support an entire sub-industry (i.e. TPE)

I will go one step further. What kind of dude wires money from his home country to the Hooker/BG in BK on a monthly basis and then proceeds to refer to her as his girlfriend until his next trip to BK. And by the way clueless old fat git, she is still working in a bar and banging other dudes while you are wiring her money.

...Have not been there for awhile, but would assume that todays rate is quite different than the recent past. If you can have as much fun at home for less dollars......

Many guy's (dudes) do send Money to there BG girl friend's, why because they think she will change?
He is hoping at least, deep down he must know the truth but is blinkered as no other Lady has treated him so good! sex and praise and that SMILE and not forgeting the soft skin.
It's His money so who cares! most times when you tell a friend to wake up about a Lady they just turn on you,he 's a big Boy now let them learn for them self's!

last time my Thai wife (Australian Citizen) talked to her Mother she was upset about the way thing's are changing, it seems many older ladies now also in there town Surin Province now go to Pattaya and Marry older men even though there already married to a Thai husband, bleed them dry! bring them back to the new house he's payed for, the Thai husband will be there but that's just my brother she will say, and now Tuksin is gone the drugs are everywhere again in the village, this is a Real problem many desperate people after easy money.
to Me this board is for info to help others!

TPE does a good job and it's not easy and can be Very Dangerous!
I say if you take a BG for an Empty (sex) pay her than move on, if you want a Girl friend There's PLENTY waiting for you out there! just look else where not in a bar.
to make it work one has to make a commitment.
than again just remember when the BG say's she' got to go home for the weekend she's proberly with the boyfriend or Husband?
while your banging a twenty something year old at playboy or your hotel.
so it works both ways.

I should add,
I am not one of those guys sending $$$...just a laid back 35 year old that thinks whatever makes a dudes heart feel good then go for it..
when I lived in Thailand, before I met my wife, I had a GF that had an australian "sponsor" that sent her 30,000baht a month.....she really liked the guy (he was like 60) but you know...
if this dude is going to bed with happy thoughts of a girl that will make all his dreams comes true on his bi-annual vacations then let the guy enjoy!!!!
the problem, as it has been addressed on BTF many many times, is if he cant afford the payments and it affects him in a detrimental manner.

I think it says a lot! The lines are the same, the stories are the same...
I guess the BKK reputation is so strong, that I was prepared for some mystical experience, instead, I found a nice place with some lovely girls, very friendly, inexpensive fun and nice company. No complaints mind you, I think it is great.
