Want to find some artists that the "normal" cd stall never carries and I am a complete non techie.........
any thoughts where one can buy such oddball artists like Hootie and the Blowfish,Sarah Maclaughlin, Dixie chicks........................wow, I have really opened myself up for flaming but maybe someone knows a place where one can find more of these types above. Save the reply that mocks my taste but hey I like what I like..

I would first try whats left of the online MP3 download sites in Russia like http://www.gomusic.ru. 10-15 cents (US) a track, usually better quality (192-256).
If you have a handful of albums you want now, then check out the site, see if they have most of what you want. If so, throw 20 bucks into a new account and start downloading right away.
We will never really know if/when these sites will get turned off so my strategy now is to wait until I have a 3-5 CDs I want, then go and do the above rather than leaving money in an account that may disappear.
If you do this, the best time to download is in the AM while most of Europe is still asleep and the server load is light. During the daytime or evening (here) the speed is painfully slow.

Found them all previously at the 100 Baht CD stalls in Patpong, etc...

I don't get it...
If you've got a decent inet connection, why spend 100 baht (about 3 USD at the moment) for a mediocre copy of tunes when you can get better quality for essentially half the price?!

Because the CDs are direct copies of the orignal CDs (thus, at full quality), and the downloads are, by default, compressed and lesser quality (unless you use AllofMP3.com, but then you're also paying more for the higher quality songs).
The biggest factor is quite simply - convenience.
By the time you jumped through all of your girations of downloading, transfering, etc, I already picked up a dozen CDs and I'm playing them, or giving them to TGs, etc...

Actually, I'm a big Sarah MacLaughlin fan myself. Dude, the best place I found for the niche genre's like yours are either the Khao San Rd. vendors, or the Fortune IT Mall vendors.
In Fortune IT Mall- right around, and on the floor above the True shop- are some vendors with amazing niche market stuff. Plenty of concert DVD's, and normal CD's.

Suan Lum night plaza also has a lot of CD stalls for 100 baht or 6 for 500 baht. Very good quality also. Can take the subway from Sukumvit and they open from 6pm til midnight.

Let me know where you find this? I have gotten original CDs from the major stores, no problem. However we have purchased more than 50 CDs from various stalls in town and they are not identical copies of the originals. Many are compilations and even those which are identical (on a track basis) have all been 128k.
I spoke to guys at 2 different stalls about this and they said confirmed most of what they sell is 128. The reason is quite simple: smaller files= faster duplication and when they are dubbing 100s or 1000s a day, the time adds up.
As for the Ru mafia - ok, if you believe this is where it is going then I can accept that reason.
As for the CC - most use reputable transaction companies located in Holland or other "western" European company to deal with fund xfers.... so not with Ru operations. THe transaction companies are arguably as secure if not more secure than US based services.
Lastly, on convenience....what could be more convenient than I hear a tune and decide I want it: I go online, download this and have it on my machine is <5 mins.
Anyway, to each his own.....
