Isan's total population as of 2000 was 20,825,000. 40% of the population is concentrated in the provinces of Khorat, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani and Khon Kaen. These provinces surround the four major cities of the same names; as of 2000, their populations were: Udon Thani 220,493; Khorat 204,391; Khon Kaen 141,034; and Ubon Ratchathani 106,552. However, as of 1996 only 6.3% of the region's population lived in municipal areas. Khon Kaen was the most urbanised province (with 12.4% in municipal areas), and Roi Et the least (2.8%). Thus, the population is still largely rural, but concentrated around the urban centres.

I would bet the actual numbers are much less than these (from Wikipedia I think), as the numbers are most likely based upon which household one is registered with and not where they actually live. So many of the BG’s working in Pattaya, Bangkok, etc are counted in these numbers even though they actually live in Pattaya, Bangkok, etc. Also true for many construction workers, other laborers, and some factory workers as well.

Udorn Thani bus depot is just around the corner from my place.
What I could do is conduct a statistical survey. I could set up a nice chair and large umbrella at the depot where the buses are leaving Udorn for the journey south into Bkk, Pty and Phuket. A single page form (oh yeah for girls only between 18-35) of everyday activities which they could be doing at those locations. That should be easy for them to answer, sleep, eat, drink, party and catch farangs.
The next day I would set up the same chair and umbrella next to the buses returning from the southland. Greet the same age ladies and ask them some personal questions. Sorry men, personal questions, can't put them on here.
All of this will be done free of charge to assist the Govt, barrafish and LY.

IBFARANg, you are correct! I know that I the village I go to once the girl gets out of school she leaves to 'work'. Some end up in Saraburi or Chonburi working in factory's, some end up in the nightlife business.
You know how you can tel which girls are working in nightlifE? Those are the houses inthe village getting work done, new roof, new fence, or just plain old new house.
But there is a whole age group missing now. It is really amazing to see only kids and middle age people and older there. No girls from around 17 to 30.
I always wondered what the impact would be longer term to their way of life in the village. The standard of living has gone up for sure over the past 5 years, as an example 5 years ago there wa sno cell service, not 1 store in the whole village etc... all that has changed, I would say it has been a bit of an economic upswing there. But the family unit is gone, history. The old Thai way is no more there and it all happened in the last 5-8 years. Sad
