Agree. Cash is the best gift you can give.

Only received envelopes with money (presumably) in our wedding, not sure what happened to the money though. Noi tells me we gave it to her mother (she is a widow), I suspect this was a Thai custom thought up for thus particular occation. We sat on the carpet and everybody lined up to present their envelopes. I had been told in advance that it is custom to give a small gift to the guests so Noi's sister ahd organized it. The guests presented an envelope with both hands to us, and we would jointly give the guest the little gift. They call it kong cham luey (souvenir). In our case I think they were silk pillow cases still wrapped in plastic from the manufacturer.

Cash is indeed the norm,,, amount usually is estimated to cover costs,,,, If guests will be eating at a 5 star restaurant amount in red evnvelope will be greater than eating at the corner Isaan food outlet ( read McDonalds in Farang speak). There is of cause also variation depending on position in society, and ability to give. At my wedding the magic red envelopes added up almost exactly to the cost of the wedding including catered food, Thai whiskey, soft drink entertainment etc etc etc. Not a bad system really, beats getting 7 toasters. I really depends upon you, your situation and your relationship with the wedding party.... At the hi-so one's I've been to, 4000 was my limit. I know people that gave 1000 and some that gave 10000+ Don't sweat it too much...give what you think is suitable, then go and enjoy the scenery.....
