Hey guys,
I awoke this morning at 5am with the little lady in a heated discussion in thai with I presume her mom.
After about 10 minutes of warp speed banter, I caught about 11 words of the whole thing, wife comes back in bedroom and is frekin pissed off as hell.
well here is what happened:
Her brother just had twins and my mom put a big box together for him and his new babies (just stuff from target...baby clothes, teddy bears, bottles etc) and also for her mom and dad a few things and her other little brother just some atlanta braves/falcons shirts and a soccer ball no big deal and sends it to Nakon Sawan just as she has done at least 15 times before, BTW dropped 150 bucks on shipping which was about the total of the stuff...
So my mother-in-law gets a letter in the mail saying the post office cant deliver because the box is too big..and she must come in to pick it up.
so they jump in the truck and go down...but this time is different as they are asked several questions that they have never been asked before:
were they expecting a package? yes
where? amerika
what city in amerika? los angeles WRONG (my mother-in-law bless her heart knows that me and mrs atl live in LA but my mom sent it from the ATL)
she shows her ID and is told that she must pay 1500 baht to get the box and she refuses and says she must speak with the manager and is told the person she is speaking with now is the manager...who then retrieves the box which has been opened and the items gone thru...BTW my mom frekin duct-taped that box like it was a coffin..
I told **wife** not to worry tell her mom to just pay and next time we will just send them money instead of trying to send some things directly from the states they might appreciate..
she is furious going on about her horrible country and she starts crying (maybe the 4th time since 2002 I have seen her cry about anything.)
Keep in mind, since 2002 between me, my wife, and my wifes family my parents have probably sent a total of 30 packages and this as NEVER occured.
I had to go work and just called her and she was calmed down a bit and said her mom would go back and if still refused would ask for police assistance...my immediate thought was great then you must pay him as well..
Have any of the bro's here experienced a similiar scenario with a post office in Thailand...and does anyone have any suggestions (besides suck it up and pay) ?

Yes They do it all the Time!
the Pricks at the post office in Thailand see that its come from Falang land and think maybe there's money inside so they open it, we sent wedding photos etc 9 years ago and they never arrived, once they open it that's it GONE. They even Print there paper money (notes) in Australia seems NO many can be trusted in the Land of Scams...

having your post f***ed with is just unacceptable
and you're right about the police, they'll want to split the winnings with the post office
this happened to me when working in the mid-East, the f***ers would go thru all your mail and take everything offensive
and surely they take the shit home

they'd be better off paying the 1,500b IMHO
surely the value of the goods in box is much more than that

Yeah, what's left of it.
I always send some Packages to Farangland to my Family back in Europe and never had a thing missing. I always make sure I send it in Small Packages and use UPS.

In the time I've been here I suppose I must have got over 400 parcels posted to me.
Not one of them was tampered with.
Mind you, I have never had complete trust in the security guys at any of the apartment blocks that I have lived in and so have had each parcel delivered Post Restante at a specifically named Post Office, where one of my customer's wives was and is working part-time and where a lot of the guys began to expect me turning up periodically for my goods, which they began to know that, somehow I knew on which day the parcels would arrive. So I didn't leave parcels unattended for long....hours, maybe a day, if that.
I have had shipments of stuff wrapped, sealed and shipped by a licenced shipper in the U.K. to be delivered directly to my address. They have an arrangement with the customs in the U.K. and with a Thai concern over here and I suppose the last batch of eleven boxes was in a wharehouse in Thailand for at least five minutes.
They were all delivered to my apartment bulding. All retained their seals exept one. Nothing was taken. I didn't reach them until after they had been standing in the foyer for one hour. But it might have been the wharehouse or delivery guys or driver and not my security guards to the building. I doubt it was the customs here, because if they were suspicious about anything they would have ripped them all open and officially resealed them. But as it is, they have reciprocal arrangements about shippers with U.K., customs. It is down to how the shipping company is viewed by officialdom in their own country and their history and reputation abroad.
I do remember one time with a solitary parcel that was as usual addressed Post restante to my local post office and which contained a large pair of shoes - big feet, small penis - and which was re-directed to the customs investigative branch and I had to spend a whole hour explaining that I had big feet and so was compelled to order a pair of shoes from outside Thailand and once I had shown them my feet, I thought that I had finished but then, I had to spend at least another hour trying to convince them that I was not importing this particular solitary pair of shoes to sell and thereby get a huge amount of immoral wealth through the illicit sale, but that they were for personal use.
Mind you their offices weren't too busy that day and so it might have just been the time of 'Let's take the piss out of the Farang" time before their coffee break. But I doubt that too.
So, really, I feel that I cannot agree with some of you about the postal service. I have had excellent service and not just in the Star of Light.
And, in all, and there have been many of them, I have been very satisfied.
Having said that, and having come from the U.K. where postal theft is or was extemely organised, I think wherever you go in this world, you're bound to come across instances of theft
( Yes, I know. Ladies are stealing my semen all the time.
But I want them to.)
I remember once, some time ago, I was wantonly robbed of my virginity, but then, that's another story.

Hi Guys,
JW, I lived in thailand for just over 3 years and most of those aformentioned parcels were sent to my apartment and altough I experienced some reasonable delays I never had any tampering and this is what really pisses my wife off so much..
apparently when the mother in law asked why they wanted to charge her 1500 baht... the man at the nakon sawan post office said "because it came on plane" (I laughed when she said that...which only made her more angry)
I swear to god that is what he told her mom...my wife says, "my family poor, why post man want to steal from them?" (obviously because it was a first class box from USA)
then she adds, "If he want to take from poor people that are jai dee he will be a soi dog in next life for sure!"...that is so her!
she even went to a rant about the new govt and why did I ever think they would be better than Taksin....not that the new govt had anything to do with this event...she made me chuckle on that one 
so I think what this boils down to is she is just so entirely let down by the fact her countrys people would want to take advantage of her poor but very strong and good family...she is way too idealistic and EPC and SeaJohn thats coming from me LOL!..
LY...I am 100% with you, they should have paid it..I know they have it as she sends more than enough back every month.
She said 1500 big deal to mom, dad and grandpa..maybe they just dont understand that the gifts and shipping cost my mom about $300 and an extra 40 bucks is small price to pay to risk making my moms jesture all in vain..
we will see monday what happens..my money is on everything is gone..

I'd insist on a receipt and then I dump the 1500 in half baht coins on his desk.
Better course of action, pay it and get a receipt then forget it.

on one of my many stays in bkk I made the mistake of having a courier sent to me, it was either fedex or dhl, anyway turns out I had to pay about 2,000baht in tax for receiving it!
and that was with the concierge of a 5* hotel kicking up a stink too, he was embarrassed
all it contained was one pair of trainers (sneakers) worth $100 probably

Unknown to me a friend sent me a gift from the UK to Thailand by DHL. Somehow it was inspected at customs, and they decided I had to pay a certain amount of tax for it.... well, DHL took about 3 weeks to contact me and inform me. Then DHL wanted me to pay storage for those 3 weeks.... I refused telling them it was them who had taken 3 weeks to contact me... I said that I would just pay the tax.... they didn't like it.... I didn't move from that position.... neither did they.... at the end they didn't get their storage cost, but neither did I get the package; they had to send it back to my friend at their cost.
