Well my girlfriends tourist visa is quickly coming to an end. We have decided to get married and I am now looking at all the forms to apply for the PM visa for Australia. Has anyone been through this process recently, or can offer advice. We are thinking of doing this ourselves as we have been quoted 75,000 Baht + the visa fee, by one agency in Bangkok which seams ridiculous. Any advice would be appreciated.

Get the forms from the embassy (may be able to download from the site) and do it yourself. There is nothing an agency can do that you can not do yourself.

cool dude, I did the fiance' visa a few years back, rules havn't changed and we did it ourselves with not much hassle. P.M questions if you don't want to write them here, other-wise just write them here and I'll answer next time I'm in here. As with most things GOVERNMENT ( AL ) if they ask for proof of relationship you need to go to extremes,, copy all telephone bills, copy all pics iof her and you together, get as many friends and family as possible to write stat-decs etc etc. Lot of gathering info, usually 5 month wait and BOB's your uncle. Remember whilst applying for the Fiance' visa ( this must be applied for OFF-SHORE) there is nothing stopping a tourist visa so she can wait in Aus,,,BUT remember she will have toi return to BKK to GET the approved visa. Mel. Also don't leave the Police clearance to the last minute as the police say it takes a minimum of 5 weeks ( that suddenly changed when my Mrs was told to go back and see then and have 1,000 BHT inside the form,,,,,took 45 minutes that time,,TIT. You've got some excellent advice there from the guys. It is a hassle but whatever you do, don't refer any of it to an agency. In this process, they are completely un-necessary and are out just to get the money from you for what you can do yourself and in certain things, have to do yourself. Good luck. JW.

Cool Dude,,,I was told 8-9months but that was a few years back ( as said was done in 5), I think they now process the application in Aus rather than in LOS,,,,maybe Aus people type faster,,lol. DON"T assume they know ANYTHING,, recopy all those phone bills, they are suspicious c***s, so you need to really REALLY make it 1,000,000 % clear to them about everything. She will need a chest X-ray for TB and some blood tests,, there is a list of APPROVED hospitals in BKK to get them done. If youyv'e travelled outside LOS together make sure you copy the relavent passport pages. I just recently got f***ed around trying to get my wifes Aunty a tourist Visa,, they stated she had no real reason to return to Thailand,, her 14, 11 and 9 year old daughters NO reason to return ?? WTF,, the house she owns NO reason to return WTF, she can't speak Engliush and her whole family and life is built around ISaan. You just to keep cornering them,, in the end I said OK f*** ya's, I'm mso sure she'll do the right thing I'll pay a "security deposit ", that f***ed em. $8,000 dollars and their now happy she won't stay in Australia deserting her 3 daughters, her house and her whole family to live in a country who's language she does not understand and who's culture is completely foreign to her. As I said they can be stubborn priks,. Mel

Excellent point made. Don't submit anything unless you retain a copy............and that includes everything. If they lose something vital and then deny that it was submitted and you don't have a copy, you're f***ed.

Great advice guys. I have printed all the forms including health and police checks. It seams fairly straight forward. The immi website states about three months for the visa and that using a agent does not "fast track" any application....except in Thailand lol! Mel, The info I’ve read does not indicate that we need the health and police checks when we apply initially. Seams we will be informed at a later stage when this is required. I did have to order the book "Life in Australia" via the immi website. The application forms now require the applicant to sign off on Social Security and an Australian Values statements. This book is A4 and 42 pages long. All applicants for permanent visa's now have to have read the book or have had it explained to them. CD

From the info I have read, for Australia you need to prove 12 months defacto, shared bills bank accounts etc before you can apply for a spouse visa.
